Simply adding another playoff team, or balancing the schedule, won't necessarily help the Jays. It just re-sets the bar for competition. Add another playoff team, and teams that thought they were "out of it" before will think they can go for it. Just more competition. And even with a balanced schedule, Boston and NY will still be two of the best teams in the league, and then you have 2 or 3 more slots everyone else is fighting for.
There has to be some sort of cap system in place, which will hurt the Red Sox and Yanks if they sign a bad contract. As it is, they can sign whoever they want, on whatever 7yr $120M deal they need to, and if it goes bad, they can just go find someone else. All the other teams have to suffer their bad contracts.
