This thread made me sad.
I'm gonna pretend I don't remember any of this and just say that John Olerud rules, but I'm not gonna cry when he doesn't make the Hall.
You guys just made me feel a lot better about the JP era. I guess I should say thank you.

This analysis rewarding peak performance looks good on Olerud. He's at the HOF median.

Yeah, but even with the BBWAA slowly entering the modern era, they still aren't ever going to elect a first baseman with 255 career HRs, two All-Star appearances, and only one top 10 finish for MVP.

Williams for Hamilton was actually Dave Stewart's call. He had just been brought in as Asst. GM and was told to scout and arrange a deal to show his mettle. He made some calls and came back with Joey Hamilton who was being compared to David Wells at the time. Woody was seen as being home run prone (being in SD sure helped that), and not a good fit for Skydome. This deal turned out so bad that of course when Ash was let go, Stewart was not considered for the job. Alas Stewart called racism (falsely) and basically ended his career on the management side in baseball and became an agent.

Mondesi was a talent and hard worker, but was a Grade A Azzhole. I remember Delgado saying that Mondesi refused to acknowledge anything said to him in English, and that the coaches and management had to do everything through Delgado interpreting it into spanish. He also said Mondesi could not care less about winning a game, the only thing he cared about were his stats. Delgado also said Mondesi did not show up to a team function once in the two years he was here.

Not saying he'll ever be considered, let alone get in, but he should at least be in the discussion if a guy of equal qualifications like Keith Hernandez can get the "why isn't he in?" treatment every year.

Yeah, I agree entirely...it's just a good segue into my beloved rants against the injustices of the BBWAA. Now that they've seemingly figured out what constitutes a Cy-worthy season, I only have the Hall about which to complain.

Yeah, he's a great example of a guy that can help expand the conversation about what is and should be hall-worthy. Not enough noteworthy numbers to ever really have a shot, but it'd be nice to see him get the 5% or whatever the qualifying percentage is so we can have this discussion again next year. :D
