GREAT value if he can maintain last season's productivity.

He was gonna hit free agency in three years, 38 million isn't that much of a discount compared to what he was gonna make in the three arby years. It's now officially time to start the Bring Joey Home 2014 campaign

Bring Joey home in 2014 should be the plan hoping he performs at the same level and remains injury-free. I'd love it to get to the point where fans are showing up with signs and making the media take notice. Not saying it will make a difference, but at least plant the idea in Votto's head that a coming back home could be pretty nice.

That's definitely a deal that screams "we better get good in a hurry, or I'm out"...can't imagine that the Reds were the ones hesitant to lock down a free agent year or two.

Doesn't seem like much of a discount for the Reds.

The lack of a free agent year probably had more to do with Votto's agent's salary demands than with The Reds' likelihood of competition 4 years from now.

I would be curious to see a yearly breakdown of arb awards for similar players -- mlbtr mentioned that Ryan Howard earned more for his arb years, than what Votto just signed for.
