Jays Interested in Damon and Podsednik

Post#1 » by turner10 » Wed Jan 19, 2011 4:01 am

According to Rosenthal:

"The Blue Jays avoided salary arbitration with outfielder Rajai Davis Tuesday, signing him to a two-year, $5.75 million contract.

However, the team continues to explore other leadoff options, including free agents Scott Podsednik and Johnny Damon, major-league sources say."

I'd be interested in Podsednik. He's a great base stealer and he can get on base.

I'm the exact opposite. Rajai Davis is Podsednik basically. OBP's are close, SB totals are better, although Podsednik has been doing it longer. Damon on the other hand even in a regression is still a significantly better player than either those two, regardless of steal totals.

both seem unnecessary... it would make a little more sense if either of them played at 3rd.

Podsednik is basically a worse version of Raj Davis, so that makes no sense. And Damon would only work if you can't get a better DH like Manny or Guerrero, because he can't field anymore.

With Davis already on the roster...I'd be shocked if either player was serious about joining the Jays

It's not that Davis is already on the roster, it's the need for another left handed bat, which I'm all for. Just not Posednik. He does more damage than good - he's not a good base stealer. Much rather have Johnny Damon in a part time role for more of that veteran presence. He's played on winning teams before, that's what we need.

Damon is easily better than Pods or Davis. We really don't need any of the three, though. Maybe Damon for DH, but I'd rather get Manny or Vlad since we have Davis for the 4th OF. I'm pretty sure we'll be picking up a DH at some point in order to send E5 back to third.

at least podsednik can actually field lol damon has one of the worst arms in the league..damon for dh is alright but podsednik is a better lead off hitter and fielder imo..it's true that davis and podsednik are similar though so i can't see why jays would sign either of these guys

I agree with the notion that we're better off signing Manny or Vlad. I'm wondering if this is an indication AA doesn't think he'll be able to get either of those two? Perhaps the asking price is just too high. Or he could be smokescreening, indicating interest eslewhere to get them to show their cards.

Who knows really?

Perhaps he's legitimately interested in these guys. If that's the case, it certainly seems to indicate a shift in philosophy from last years bang em out of the park approach. Maybe Farrell really is more interested in a balanced approach (which I'd find refreshing - just not necessarily these guys).

They're interested in these guys because they're left handed bats. Nothing more. Nothing to do with the DH situation.

No Podsednik for me, please. He has unsurprisingly declined as a base stealer as he hits his mid-30s, and while his last two years of production haven't been bad, neither have they been particularly good. If we're looking that low, just give Thames the job out of spring training...we have more than enough left-handed hitting in the organization.

Not to mention, we don't even more guys who can't hit lefties. Just sign Manny already.

I like it. I'm comfy with Thames as a 4th OF/ LH bat/ and youth promotion from within.

Like Damon's game. He would give us a lot of the little things that we need. He hits for a decent average and he will add stability and leadership to the clubhouse.

If it comes to financials I like Damon at 5 per more than Manny at 15 per. Plus Damon being as a lefty does balance out our order a bit more. Seriously, we are ridiculously RH-heavy. We have only Snider and Lind as LF bats, even the platoon and relief guys like JPA and E5 are righties... that is an easy pitching matchup for any opposing manager.
