Possible to watch Jays game on MLB.tv?

Post#1 » by evilRyu » Sun Mar 27, 2011 12:22 am

I'm aware of the blackout issue in Canada, but I got an e-mail from bluejays.com titled "Watch Every Out-Of-Market Blue Jays Game LIVE Online". Would that imply that I *can* watch Jays game, but I just won't get the local broadcast (in our case, Sportsnet)? I clicked on the link, which brought me here:

http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/subscriptions/in ... -193723150

One of the features is "Home and Away Broadcasts". Yet at the bottom it says "Blackout and other restrictions apply", leading to: "All live Toronto Blue Jays games are blacked out throughout the entire country of Canada". So as you can see, I'm quite confused, as there seems to be lots of contradictory statements. Bottom line: Can I watch Jays game (regardless of home or away broadcast) with MLB.tv?

If it's not possible at all, can I use something like hotspot shield? I have a ps3, and I'd like to make use of the MLB.tv functionality.

all blue jays games are blacked out... in all Canadian regions.

The black outs are IP-specific only.

the email might have been referring to spring training games which have no blackouts but for regular season games, every single Jays game will be blacked out for anyone with Canadian ip adresses.

Thanks pierro and Avenger for the responses. It seems that the key idea relates to Canadian ip addresses :)

Anyone else have experience with MLB.tv in Canada?

pierro...i may be heading over to Asia for a few months this summer. If i sign up for this, would i be able to watch all the blue jays games from over there? Not sure how the IP works, as i live in Toronto. Does my IP go with me and they will black me out thinking i'm in Toronto, even though i'm in Asia?

that's a good point.. instead of what IP is being used, it's the address that you register with?

You'll be able to watch the Jays overseas, their system first checks for local IP addresses(where you're logging in from) and if you have an IP that is outside of the blackout regions you'll be able to watch regardless of where you signed up from and what your IP was then. If you use some sort of a ip maskign device that doesn't allow their software to pintpoint your location, the system then checks for where you registered your account from but that shouldn't be a problem for you

Avenger is correct here. The address you signed up with doesn't matter. The address is just for billing/fraud purposes for your credit card.

Check if they have a free trial and test this. I can watch NBC, ABC, CBS, Comedy Central and other websites with this and they have similar restrictions. The only thing that doesnt work is Hulu.

If you are using firefox, install the following addon:

http://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/967 then:

1) In Firefox, Go to tools->modify headers
2) From the drop down box on the left select add
3) Then enter: "X-Forwarded-For" in the first input box without the quotation marks
4) Enter: "12.13.14.15" in the second input box without the quotation marks
5) Leave the last input box empty, and save the filter, and enable it

6) Click the 'Configuration' tab on the right then proceed to check the 'always on' button.
Close the Modify Headers box and it should work.

If not, you can always download a program that gives you a free VPN.

Thanks guys....this sounds perfect for keeping tabs on the jays while travelling. I see they have full game archives as well...so don't even have to watch them live which is nice as the time zone differences could make for some weird game times out there.

So sounds like you can find workarounds to watch on a computer but we're out of luck trying to watch on a ps3? Are there any IP modifiers for the PS3?
