Well, it's just the nature of building from the ground up in a league where youngsters flame out at a high rate. He has sold Rogers on the notion of building through the draft, and it's absolutely the right way to go about it...but it's also pretty risky. If the team starts backsliding and some of the kiddies and his acquisitions fall on their faces, ownership might not allow him as much rope as JP got.

Well some of the (really) youngsters (Gose, Lawrie, Hech, Cardona) may flame out. But he's got enough of a stable to keep his persona afloat for a while. His young starting rotation is going to win him a lot of games without even trying... Add to that a locked up JBau, plus Lind, and a controllable Snider, and he's still got other eventualities to increase his own personal WAR...

Not to mention that if you save management 86 MILLION doll$lll$llars in 1 foul swoop, I can promise that you are dining at Ruth's Chris on someone else's credit card for the rest of your life. He's the golden child. A made man. Its his job as long as he wants.

I see winning 80 games in baseball no different than an NHL/NBA team finishing in 9th place. It's not something to brag about. Heck, even if an NHL/NBA team constantly finished in 8th place, and was a first round exit, it would be nothing to brag about.

And I'll only ever feel sorry for the Jays being in this division when they become vocal about wanting out of the situation. But they're satisfied being in this AL East.

But I'd rather be the perpetual 1st round exit team than the team that never makes the playoffs.
