Wow.. There's still so much national interest in the Jays. Even with fewer kids playing baseball. Raps could only dream to have that kind of interest.
OTOH, Jays would wish to have the Raps attendance figures. I wonder which teams would choose....better tv ratings or attendance.

If Rogers actually paid for a consistent winner like they are capable of, can you imagine what the television ratings would be?
There is a huge market for this team, and they have yet to take advantage of it in 10 years.

Randle, when the times right! (which will be never) is when they'll spend for a consistent winner

For anyone who thinks the Blue Jays are not profitable, this should end the debate. To put these numbers into context the Texas rangers draw like 150,000 to 200,00 a game(maybe even less, the numbers aren't clear) and they just signed a TV contract that will guarantee them 80 million a year for 20 years. Rogers makes a killing by hosting the games on their channels, i wish they actually released the figures. Jays connected pre game show probably drew more people than a lot of teams' home openers.

How long has Jays management been talking about getting our payroll back over $100 million?
I'll believe it when I see it.

There's less kids playing baseball, but it really looks like more people are playing slo-pitch softball nowadays. It seems to be bigger and bigger every year.

Well considering they had a run of about 4 seasons or so operating above 90M (I think) I dont understand the complaint. The complaint should be money spent on the right players (ie, not Frank Thomas, Vernon Wells, Alex Rios and BJ Ryan).

That's a nice enough story (and I wish it was true), but the Jays have only had a payroll above 90M once since Rogers acquired this team in the fall of 2000 (it was in 2008, when they ranked 13th in the majors with a 97M payroll).
The team has had average-to-below average payrolls for the entirety of Rogers' run here. It's confusing to me how so many fans have ignored this over the last decade.

Do you have proof that Rogers had said 'no' to a deal or declined to take on more salary because they wanted to limit their payroll? Why would we spend money for the sake of spending money?
You are telling me that if in all those years if JP went to the Rogers brass and said, we can trade for/sign a top 5 player, but he has a salary of $20million/year, Rogers would say no? I highly doubt that considering some of the atrocious contracts they have approved in the very span you are talking about.

I'm just giving the facts here. The richest ownership in baseball has had an average-to-below-average payroll for the entirety of its run with the Jays. The reason why they've chosen not to spend is up for opinion, but the fact that they haven't is not in doubt.

Re: season opener draws best Jays TV ratings on sportsnet ever
I think it's fair to wait and see how this rebuild pans out. No idea what the numbers are but the Jays have definately increased spending on scouting, signing draft picks and international players, and that adds more value to the franchise then say a vet. Honestly if they're looking to sign big FA's, then they might have to overpay to outbid the Yanks, Bosox, etc. and that doesn't seem like a great game plan at the moment but if they're able to build the team internally into a contender, we're more likely to get FA's that want to win (Winfield, Molitor, Morris) as opposed to overpaying.
I do trust Beeston and AA though and if it wasn't for them, I probably wouldn't be as patient to wait and see. Maybe I'm drinking the juice on this one, but I'm willing to commit a few more years and see if they stay true to their word.

The Jays on Rogers Sportsnet broadcast attracted 363,000 viewers who watched Blue Jays shortstop Yunel Escobar blast a walkoff homer in the 10th inning for a 7-6 win over the Athletics.
Ratings drop big time going up against the Leafs...
Being on Sportsnet One also hurts.

The SN1 thing has to be huge. I notice watching Raps game in the game threads how many people are watching delayed on streams.

That's pretty damn good considering they were up against the Leafs AND Raptors AND were on Sportsnet One...
