That is a good start for sure.

Thats not necessarily true. You should be able to get a draft pick for Dotel barring he doesn't retire

And that he doesn't accept arb.

which would require him thinking he can get more than 3.5m in the open market or require a wink wink nudge nudge agreement being in place where he would decline arb if he qualified for type b status.

not sure what the union would think of that second possibility, but I have heard it discussed as happening in the past.

Latest update:

C: Jose Molina. Current arb status - N/A. Molina falls below the line by a small margin, trailing Jason Varitek for the final Type B slot. Looking less likely that he'll make it...he might have more value (read: some, but not much at all) in trade.

1B/OF/DH: Juan Rivera. Current arb status - N/A (by some distance). Not gonna happen.

2B/SS/3B: Aaron Hill. Current arb status - Type B. He has fallen out of Type A status since the last ranking, and that's a good thing. Only question is whether he'd take arbitration...and he might.

2B/SS/3B: Edwin Encarnacion. Current arb status - N/A. Not happening. Should be DFA'd.

RP: Shawn Camp. Current arb status - Type B (mid-group). Again, it's a good thing that he has fallen from Type A status; he'll definitely receive a major league deal, but no team is giving up a pick to get him.

RP: Jason Frasor. Current arb status - Type B (a shade below the A/B line). Would be best if he stuck there.

RP: Frank Francisco. Current arb status - Type B (and highly likely to remain there). Even sucking hasn't knocked him down. Could take arb, though.

RP: Jon Rauch. Current arb status - Type B (not as much of a lock, but still very likely). He'd need to be absolutely awful, or get injured, to miss arb status, and Type A looks highly unlikely.

RP: Octavio Dotel. Current arb status - Type B (also quite likely). Does he turn down arb, though?

If Molina keeps starting 2 out of every 5 games as he's been doing since Stewart came up, he'll be more likely to get Type B status.

Just realized something: Jorge Posada is going to lose catcher designation very soon, which will push Molina into the bottom Type B spot. He won't catch Varitek, but it might not matter.

From there, the only person who can really catch him is Matt Treanor...which is possible, even those Molina has a large head-start, because Treanor is starting the vast majority of Royals games at the moment.

If Free Agency was tomorrow, we'd have 9 guys that would register as type B free agents.

Jose Molina - Type B
Aaron Hill - Type B
Octavio Dotel - Type B
Jason Frasor - Type B
Shawn Camp - Type B
Jon Rauch - Type B
Carlos Villanueva - Type B
Casey Jannsen - Type B
Frank Francisco - Type B
Want: Trae Young, Michael Porter Jr., DeAndre Ayton, Jaren Jackson Jr, Marvin Bagley III, Mohamad Bamba, Shai Gilgeous- Alexander, Elie Okobo, Jevon Carter

Of those, two aren't going anywhere: Janssen and Villanueva, both of whom are arb-eligible for next year.

Could you see Villanueva being traded being that his value is at an all time high and may never be this high ever again in his career ?

I don't see him getting traded. Contenders won't want him as a starter knowing that they're gonna have to shut him down sooner or later, and rebuilding teams have no reason to give up prospects to take a chance on Villanueva. So whoever's trading for Villanueva isn't gonna give up any more than what they'll give up for a decent reliever.

Just shut him down before September, and possibly give him a spot next year. Worst case scenario, he's a good long relief.

How soon will the MLB be looking to change how the dishing out of compensatory picks work?

Current CBA expires this season, so I'm sure it'll be considered. Haven't read anything on it, though.

As much as I love the advantage of us getting all the compensatory picks in the draft, I'd be shocked if some sort new system isn't implemented where you can't have teams like us exploiting the Type A Type B free agent picks.
