Rosenthal: "MVP debate will have no clear winner"

Post#1 » by MoMoneyMoProbs » Fri Sep 9, 2011 4:25 pm

http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/justin-verlander-jose-bautista-curtis-granderson-mvp-debate-will-have-no-clear-winner-090911

To me, one of Bautista’s appeals as an MVP candidate is that he twice changed positions to help his team, opening the season in right field, moving to third base on June 28, then back to right on Aug. 5.

Bautista’s defensive value is a separate topic of debate — traditional numbers indicate that he is an excellent outfielder, but advanced metrics suggest that he is below-average in right. Regardless, the Jays think so highly of the way he carries himself, they used his character as part of their rationale to award him a five-year, $65 million contract last offseason when many still thought him a fluke.

Is any of that measurable? Of course not.

Tough call. It's down to Ellsbury and Bautista for me at the moment.

You got mix some decent power numbers in there to get some consideration, and Agone's has completely evaporated post ASG. Average only gets you so far...how many MVPs did Gwynn or Carew win? Just one between them.

If Jays had a winning record and were in the playoffs.. i think its safe to say Bautista would easily win.

I also think that quote is pretty funny since it's obviously about as wrong as can be. There will be a clear winner; he'll be the freaking MVP. Not saying it won't be controversial and assuredly some will think it undeserved, but there will be one absolute, no doubt about it winner.

I think you're confusing the MVP *debate* with the MVP *award*

Not really, it'll be hard to debate who the MVP is when there is one. Like I said in the first post, some debate may continue on who it should've been, but the MVP debate will 100% without a doubt be finished when someone wins.

No, the MVP debate is not about who wins, but about who should win. There's a difference.
