Offseason needs

Post#1 » by dballislife » Fri Sep 30, 2011 8:54 pm

we obviously need 3 important pieces imo,

1. our biggest need, starting pitching wins games, we absolutely need a bonafide number 2 starting pitcher after ricky, we can't keep goin into the season "hoping" that both morrow and cecil finally get it, and that dustin drabek bounce back and alveraz continues his play, no more ifs, how bout some for sures

2. i dont even remember that last time the jays had a legit dominating closer, koch? how many close games did we lose in late innings

3. maybe a big bat behind jose, or at least a decent 25 .275 guy that can deliver consistently...im not sure lind or lawrie can fill this need next year

SP - though i wouldn't sign anyone in free agency not named CC Sabathia, trade route here is a much better option, IMO.

BIG bat - Fielder makes all the sense in the world regardless if they wanna go for it next year or in 2013 as Fielder fits in long-term.

Closer - wouldn't give anyone more than a 2 year deal here.

Bullpen help and a top three starter.

Not sure how all of us missed this one.

http://www.thescore.com/home/articles/171631-early-front-runners

Early Saturday morning, Olney tweeted: "Within the industry, the Toronto Blue Jays are viewed as an early frontrunner in the pursuit of Yu Darvish."

Almost a couple weeks old, but can't say I would be surprised if Rogers saw the value in the marketing values of Darvish. Oh yeah, he hasn't been that bad over his career either I suppose. Let's face it though, can't say Japanese pitchers have ever set the north american circuit ablaze as of yet.

1 Get rid of Lind
2 Get a 1st baseman
3 Get rid of Cecil
4 Get a real starter not Jo-Jo Reyes
5 Revamp bullpen
6 Get a 2nd baseman

No order of importance really, but all of this needs to get done:

1. Sign Prince Fielder
2. Re-sign 2B Johnson
3. Use Lind, Cecil, Snider/AAA player(s) as trade for a very good SP and bullpen help
4. Bullpen is iffy - shore it up
5. Bring back Johnny Mac

As for a closer, it's not a need now that FF is back to playing well enough for that spot.

I have faith that all of these things can be accomplished, and if they are, look out NYY!

So, trade all our crappy players for a very good SP. Well, Tony Reagins and Jim Hendry were fired, so that really narrows down the possibilities.

If we're getting Darvish, we'll probably also know quite a bit before the Meetings. The Japanese players seem to be posted in early November.

1- Get a top 2 pitcher (sign or trade).... not a top 3, i mean top 2. the third spot is not hard to earn for a decent pitcher already in our system. We need solid top 2 guys, those r the guys that are suppose to carry you. Also i wouldnt trade Cecil for scraps which is what we'd get. He needs one more chance and worse will be a solid bullpen arm.

2- i say strengthen the bullpen with quality players.... we dont need to sign a guy for "only" the closer role. I'd prefer someone earn that job and yes Frank Francisco looks like the front runner for now but leave it wide open, knowing how he struggled last season's start. FF would also make AA look alittle better if he can close, after the Napoli deal and all.

3- a solid power bat. Id love to see Fielder, but honestly we just need a guy with good power and average to bat after Bautista. Lind has the power but he is not consistent at all to backup Jose. Bautista with a solid safety guy after him would do even more damage than he does now..... now I dont mean throw Lind away. Keep Lind as 1b if the replacement is another position, or if he is a 1b (preferably) then Lind can DH....... i like Lind better than EE still [just saying]

----------------

- I wont mention the 2b problem because im confident AA will bring back Johnson. there no better option and he is decent.

1. Sign high ceiling players for the minors
2. Sign a stopgap cheap 2B for 1 year
3. Add bullpen help (1 year deals)

Why do we need to go all out now? I'd rather wait for our stacked farm system.

looks like the diamondbacks are not going to pick up the option on hill. whether they sign him outright or he becomes a free agent, should be interesting to see what happens now.

Who says we're going all out? Nobody is suggested selling our entire farm for old dinosaurs. At some point, you're gonna have to trade few of the prospects anyway, and we'd be trading for/adding pieces that will contribute for years. Sitting back and hoping that prospects develope into stars is a terrible strategy.

we have a legit ace in romero, potential bottom of rotation starters in morrow and cecil, good bullpen arms, along with the best hitter in baseball today, great bats in escobar lind lawrie, potential in jp rasmus, plus a lot more young potential...we're ready and close for a real playoff run imo, just missing a few key pieces, you know u gotta break the bank sometime in baseball to take that next step, AA better do some spending this as well as next summer
