this speculation is such a tease. I swear I just drooled on my lecture notes thinking about the possibility of a Votto/Bautista combo in the 3/4 hole.

some of you say that the Reds don't have to trade Votto.
but they still likely are, so the "don't have to" point is moot.

and using Halliday as a reference: I'm pretty certain that the teams trading for him had discussions with him prior to the trade re: re-signing. i assume they weren't selling the farm for a rent-a-player

What makes you think they're likely to trade him? Why would they trade him if they didn't have to?

Has there been any real evidence that Votto is on the block? All Heyman said is that teams are showing interest. I'll bet teams are showing interest in Lawrie too but I doubt the Jays are gonna move him. Votto is still under team control for two years and I can't imagine that the Reds will trade him. This thread seems like 6 pages of fanciful overreaction to me.

It's not time to sell the farm, but I think it is time to start making a push. It's not going to happen in one year, but bringing in a big bat via signing or trade, and hopefully a big arm, will show the league we are serious.

Especially if we can bring in the big bat before free agency opens. That's the advantage of a trade...we could potentially bring inB a guy like Votto first and use him as a selling point for other targets. With free agency, it's more boom/bust; if you're dealing with Boras, it's a safe bet that it'll be a couple weeks after the filing deadline before you have any idea whether you're going to land the player or not.

That's a good point. And realistically, we probably have a better chance at trading for Votto than signing Fielder outright, so even if the latter option may be preferable, making a big trade would be better than doing nothing. If we want an elite 1B, and we should, the market has been set at 20+ million per year on a long term deal, and we have to be okay with paying that, whether it's Votto on an extension or Fielder as a FA. I'd be happy to give either Votto or Fielder that for 6, 7, even 8 years if necessary. Votto is the better all around player and the safer bet, but Fielder is a bit younger and his 6-8 years would start now, as opposed to two years from now when Votto will be 30.

That being said, while it would be nice to have Votto on board early to help attract free agents, if he's here, I'm not exactly sure who the targets would be. The big 1Bs would be out of the picture, CJ Wilson is going to get overpaid, so I wouldn't expect AA to be in on him anyway, and there aren't many other big fish we would likely be in on. I'd be most interested in Yu Darvish, regardless of what happens with the bat, but if I understand his situation correctly, I don't think having Votto would help our case. Either we have the best offer or we don't. I guess it could help attract guys to plug the holes without having to overpay.

i thought this rumour's been a number of months in the making.
if i recall, the rumour was that things were souring mid-season.
we also haven't seen the Reds deny these rumours.

until then, let us have fun and dream a little dream

They have denied it, actually: http://marksheldon.mlblogs.com/2011/10/ ... ing-votto/

"We haven’t talked about it. I wish that people would stop writing it," said Jocketty. "Why would we trade one of the best players in the game? We’re trying to win."

The Reds don't even pick up the phone unless at least two of the fallowing names are offered. Romero, Morrow, Drabek, Alverez, Hutch, plus two more prospects and one of our LF's

Good point.

If we can add Votto, and then snag a guy like CJ Wilson in FA without having to give up any of our big league players then all of a sudden we are a contendor imo.
