Jays looking at Broxton

Post#1 » by MGD24 » Fri Nov 11, 2011 7:53 pm

The Jays, among other teams, are looking at the medical records of Jonathan Broxton

#BlueJays among 6-8 clubs that have shown interest & asked for his medical records. #Mets, surprisingly, not among that group

Broxton is probably looking at a one-year deal to rebuild his value and go out on the market next winter.

We all know AA doesn't mind his one year rentals. Might be an option for us. I obviously wouldn't mind granted he's healthy, but a long term closer is always nice too.

Said it before, I really like the idea of bringing Broxton in on a one-year deal, with an option if possible.

A 1+1 deal for Broxton is probably the best way to go as far as free agent closers. Whether he is completely healthy is the bigger issue.

I wouldn't rely on him as a closer, because there's a pretty good chance that he won't be healthy, or that his declining velocity and control are permanent (at which point he's useless). But as one of several bullpen candidates he's a great pickup.

Probably would need to invest significantly to get Nathan (in years and $)
Shorter contracts are more of AA's bag

A change of scenery would do Broxton good. Just hope lofty expectations aren't expected from him.

No, no it's not. When do those deals ever work out?

I was a huge fan of Broxton's when he was coming up in the minors in LA. Obviously, he hasn't been so good the past 2 years or so, but I think, if healthy, he can be more than a decent closer. I'd love for the Jays to be able to get him on a cheap deal.
Good Lord, the little stoner's got a point.

There aren't many options out there. No harm in trying him out, it's not a big loss if he fails miserably.

I hope they're looking at Nathan too. I like him more than Broxton for the Jays. Broxton has obvious problems with his velocity decline and control. He was also pitching in the NL West. Of course, this is assuming they both get similar deals.

I'm not opposed to giving Broxton a shot, but if they hope to compete they mustn't stop there. Broxton and Nathan, for example, would be much more encouraging.

The bullpen needs some quality veteran depth. A guy like Nathan could hopefully groom one of the younger guys (Carreno, anyone) into our closer of the future.
Nick Nurse recounting his first meeting with Kawhi:
“We could have gone forever. (Raptors management) kept knocking on the door and I was like, ‘A couple more minutes.’ Because we were really into it."

Jonathan Broxton is 27 (IIRC) and Joe Nathan is 36 (?)
If I have to take a flyer on one of these guys on a two year deal my leaning is going to be Broxton.
