Allocating 25% of your all time payroll peak (98 million) in a declining asset (like Pujols or Fielder) just isn't an investment that makes sense for such a team like us. If I was convinced either would put us over the top or we could sustain a payroll higher than that (120 million?), that'd be another story, but I'm not.

it is interesting to see the traditional big FA players, NYY and BOS, are currently not in on the elite players such as Pujols, Fielder, Reyes.

I'm pretty sure that this is the strongest free agent market we've seen in many years.
You have the best hitter of the generation, another MVP candidate, the NL batting champion, a finals #1 starter and multiple different all-star players available.
What exactly are you looking for that you don't have here?

Ok but our payroll is slated to be about $60 million as it's constituted now. I hear time and again from Beaston that we're going to be a $120 million payroll team. So there's some room there for us to get to.
Seriously if you think about it for next season to get to a $120 million payroll & adding $60 million along the way:
Closer: Bell $10 million
2B/SS: Johnson $6 million or Reyes $15 million
LH Reliever: Dontrelle Willis $2 million
Starting pitcher: Burhle $15 million or CJ Wilson $20 million
That get's you to $33-$46 additional payroll and don't tell me that we wouldn't be a serious playoff contender.
Total Team budget $93-$106 million and we'd be a playoff team.
I really isn't that impossible to talk about. That's why fans are getting frustrated with the inactivity.

There's no guarantee that team makes the playoffs
Also, what the hell has CJ Wilson done in his career to warrant Roy Halladay type money?

The Jays could still be paying Roy Halladay Roy Halladay-type money (which is a huge bargain) if Rogers was more committed to spending to build a winning baseball team.

Didn't Doc say he wasn't going sign back with us?

Re: Why are Fans against spending Rogers money?
Paying Buehrle and Wilson that type of money is (Please Use More Appropriate Word). I'm all up for trying to bring in a top dog, but none of those two pitchers are it. Wilson is still has a good upside, but Buehrle is tumbling down faster then humpty dumpty.
Regardless though, Wilson will get paid this offseason (prob 15 a season). Buehrle at most should get 8.

I don't really think we need to spend to get a LH middle reliever, since Luis Perez performed ok last year. As reliever, he had 3.54 xFIP, 7.58 K/9, 3.11BB/9, and 65.8GB%. Samples may be small, but those number does match Perez's minor league number. I believe Willis is already a washout even as a reliever.

So far the offseason is slow, there aren't many major signing in the FA market, not just Jays. Let's see if the Winter meeting can generate some actions.

Yeah, after the Jays made it clear that they weren't going to be spending any more money to try to win and intended to take a step backward.

Re: Why are Fans against spending Rogers money?
Back to the thread title.
It would be fun to see if Jays spent 45 millions per year on Pujols/Fielder + Reyes, and another 30 millions per year on Wilson + a closer.
That 45m +30m numbers are from my person estimate based on the following information.
Howard signed 5 years $125m at age of 30, Pujols and Fielder should get something like that. Rumor says Reyes received an offer round $100m for 5 years and he is looking for more than $100m.
A top closer like Papelbon just signed a 4 years $50m contract, and C.J. Wilson is rumored seeking for more than $100m too.
$75 millions on 4 players per year, that is even more than Jays current payrolls. . lol.
1. Reyes
2. Escobar
3. Bautista
4. Pujols/Fielder
5. Lawrie
6. Encarnacion/Lind
7. Thames
8. Rasmus
9. Arencibia
1. Wilson
2. Romero
3. Morrow
4. Cecil
5. Alvarez
ST Janssen
CL Madson/Bell
Doesn't this look good ?

They should be going after Fielder. It is a pretty common sense decision. But they are cheap. So this thread is a waste of 1's and 0's.

Good read, pretty much says what some of us fans on this board have been saying for a while now about Fielder. But looks even better on Fox Sports lol.

Would anyone here really be pissed if we signed Fielder?

In your wildest dreams, the Jays sign Dontrelle Willis for $2M. Do you also have sex fantasies about Cloris Leachman?
At this point I'd be happy to see the Jays go out and get Fielder. From what I can see he has a good attitude and the money wouldn't put him on cruise control for the next 8 years. A bat like that does not come around very often. Even going after low-hanging fruit like Wandy Rodriguez wiould be OK in the interim. There's not much pitching available and I don't want Buehrle, and Wilson will probably go to NY/BOS for a **** load of money.

Although I'm against it, if it came up and we did sign him I would be about as excited as I was when we extended Wells.
Its a win-lose. You feel great about the next year or two having an All-Star on your roster, but then you realize the next 5 years are going to suck bigtime.
EDIT: And its also worth noting it depends on the terms. Anything under 20M a season I'll go streaking at the dome. I have a feeling it will be more in the 25M/year for 6 years though. He already turned down an extension for 20M/5 I think...
If we sign Fielder to a 6 year 150M deal, he need to come up with around 30 WAR over those 6 years for it to be market value. That's 5 WAR a year. He only put up 5 WAR or more twice in his seven year career.

Re: Why are Fans against spending Rogers money?
I wouldn't lose sleep over paying Fielder $5 million per year over market value. Players of his ability don't come around very often, and when they do, you're usually bidding against the Yankees and Red Sox for them.
We are saving at least that on Bautista's contract anyway. I'd rather those savings go into signing another star player to play with him than into Rogers' pockets and hear some more BS about spending when the time is right. Our best player is 31 and has little support. There is another playoff spot opening up, and our division is looking somewhat vulnerable anyway. The time to start spending is now.

Because I believe in the theory of Captains of Industry and that what's good for Rogers is good for Canada. That and I love healthy balance sheets. I don't invest in Rogers or anything, but I just enjoy watching them make money. Piles and piles of it. Frankly, I'll take a stellar quarterly earnings report from Rogers over Prince Fielder every day of the week and twice on Sundays.
Is that the answer you were looking for?

Besides on the field. We would have to look at how great of an investment he would be to our club. Ticket sales right off the bat would go up big time, that means everything else (food and merchandise) will go up too.
