Jays limp home to face Yankees
By Mark Zwolinksi
Categorizing the Jays and their status at this point in the season proved difficult again yesterday as they wrapped up a nine-game road trip with another inconsistent day at the plate before 25,781 at the Metrodome.

Justin Morneau killed the Jays with his bat, chopping a grounder that Jays starter A.J. Burnett turned into a two-run error in the third, and destroying a flat Burnett fastball in the sixth for a two-run homer that put the game away.

So, nine games went down like the beat from a metronome: loss, win, loss, win, loss, win ... to a 4-5 finish.

"I look at it as no matter where in the game you're at, you've got to execute your pitches and I really didn't execute that pitch," Burnett said. "I tried to go down and in and it was right over the middle of the plate and I can't allow that to happen, especially late in the game when one swing can hurt you. And it did."

Lack of offence also hurt the Jays on their recent trip. A big part of the problem has been the lack of production from Vernon Wells.

Sputtering offence stalls on the road
By Jeff Blair
"It's frustrating, especially lately because I've felt really good at home plate," said Wells, who is hitting .266 with five homers and 23 runs batted in this season, but who has only six RBI this month. "It just seems those balls that I'm hitting hard at people have come with runners in scoring positions
