Davidi: Send Romero to the minors? Worked for Cliff Lee

Post#1 » by dagger » Thu Jul 26, 2012 1:17 pm

Shi makes the point that Cliff Lee had a few good years, then a nightmare season in 2007 with confidence the main problem. He was sent to the minors, found his confidence, and returned the next season to his old self, even better. Went on to win a Cy Yonge award. Is this the right thing for Romero? If we had a healthy pitching staff, I'd certainly do it.

Definitely would do it. Slot JA Happ into the rotation for now. There's too many things that have gone wrong for the Jays with injuries, so might as well get Romero right and its not like Happ can do any worse lately. If we can just right the ship while he's gone, Romero regains his confidence, who knows what could happen.

He's been beyond terrible, so really i'm up for anything that might help him get his form back. If going back to the minors is what it takes then make it happen.

He has no confidence at all these days, especially with runners on. A trip to the minors could do him some good.

Maybe they just need a new manager and pitching coach :dontknow:

Skip a start, send him to the minors... something has to be done.

If anything, all of the injuries have bought Farrell a mulligan with management, which is unfortunate.

I'm more worried with Ricky that it's purely a confidence issue. In that case, will it get better by just annihilating minor leaguers? Ricky hasn't exactly proven he's the most mentally tough player in the league with his twitter bitchfests and overall immature reactions to things.

I think its time to send Ricky Romero down to the minors to work on his mechanics and clear his current state of mind cause whatever he's doing is not working. His last 6 starts has been really pathetic considering he's suppose to be our ace.

Our pitching staff doesn't get weaker if we send him down, if anything, it gets stronger.

I tweeted this very notion to Greg Zaun before 2 starts ago. He basically told me it was a stupid idea, and used Ricky's W-L record as his justification.

Hmm...

It worked for Doc, and many others. Something is clearly wrong with RIcky, whether it's physical, or mental, or both. Send him down, let him get right.

I've been saying this for awhile now....regardless of the pitching staff being in shambles
Romero is not a major league pitcher right now. Whats the worst thing that could happen?

Zaun himself is pretty stupid.

Romero has never been an Ace, but this season:

Career-high walk rate.

Career-low strikeout rate.

Career-high home-run rate.

Career-low strike rate (under 60!)

BABIP is league average.

GB rate is career average.

Before the 16-0 game, Ricky had a pre-game interview with Sportsnet's new hottie reporter....and during that interview and say to my friends....now that's the voice of a man with loads of confidence...being sarcastic.

I could tell from the pre-game interview Ricky would've sucked...the man needs to see a sports psychologist first, then see a pitching coach who can actually diagnose and fix pitching issues because Bruce Walton is about as useless as they come.

Not to rehash the opening scene to the Moneyball trailer, but in baseball you absolutely need confidence. You play everyday, and there's enough time in between plays to explore any doubts you might have.

At least with Greinke, you have one of the best in the game when he's not hindered by anxiety. On the other hand, with Romero you have a #2, and a soft one at that, when he's at his best, but a near scrub when he's not.

GM Alex Anthopoulos and manager John Farrell met after Wednesday's loss, exchanging ideas about how to get Romero back on track, sportsnet.ca reports.

Recommendation: As of now, Romero is slated to make his next start, though that could change as Anthopoulos and Farrell continue to weigh their options. Farrell said that "it's too premature" to talk about Romero heading to the minors despite Romero turning in his worst performance of the season in Wednesday's 16-0 loss. Triple-A might be the best option for Romero, even as the Jays remain handicapped by their injury-ravaged starting rotation.

I'd like Mathis to work with Romero for one more game and then consider the minors , as far as i can recall , Mathis hasn't caught a single game for Romero this year and he can be helpful in situations like this. I've wanted mathis to catch for him for a month now, this might finally be that chance.

Romero's pitching motion is a total mess, his release point , same thing. On televison it looks like his motion between his fastball and off speed pitches are completely different from each other(might be tipping pitches).

As per Tim and Sid yesterday, not like a lengthy assignment, but get him 4 or 5 innings down there ASAP and see how that gets him going. I feel for the guy, you can tell its killing him to be playing so bad, and the early morning workouts trying to sort out after etc, but its getting obvious that for whatever reason whatever they are trying is doing nothing, or maybe even making it worse.
