Could just be an off year for Escobar or playing injured but even in an off year he's still an average shortstop in the MLB. He still has a career .354 OBA and I think the chances of him having a bounce back seasons next year are more than him repeating this season, he's only 29.

Players have crap years, look at Romero, obviously. Better they come this year in a lost year with all of these injuries, than next year when hopefully there is something to play for late in the year

That's fine and all, but this is two of the last three years now, where Escobar has been a horrible hitter.

Hech is not Mike Trout. He's a player with a minor league track record of poor, undisciplined hitting.

How is a .290 AVG and .369 OBA last year horrible though?

Read closer, my compadre. Two of the last three(2010 and 2012).

Obviously. But that's what I mean, even the very best often suck when they first get to the majors. That's why it's especially unfair to expect a guy much more renowned for his glove, to be a good hitter as soon as he first gets called up.

Yes I realized I read it wrong , thank you for reminding me. :)

So if his career OBA is .354 you decide to lean towards his bad seasons instead of thinking how good his other ones must have been?

If his 2 seasons you're talking about were so bad then imagine how good his other ones must have been to still maintain a .354 OBA while playing bad ball this year for his standards. He's had more good seasons than bad ones.

I like Escobar(for the most part, he is a pretty strange dude, though). But don't you think it's a bit concerning that 2 of his last 3 years have been horrendous offensively?

Yes slightly, but we don't have a better option than him right now, his contract is good and the career numbers are still solid despite those 2 recent bad seasons.

I'd only give up on Escobar if he continues this next year but I still think he can bounce back.

Oh, I certainly didn't expect Hech to have any success and I don't blame him for failing here so far. But that's kind of the point. He's shown nothing offensively that would lead to me to believe he's anywhere close to ready for the majors. Yunel Escobar is the far better option for the immediate future.
