Blue Jays claim 1B-OF Canzler from Cleveland

Post#1 » by jnfviet » Fri Dec 21, 2012 11:33 pm

TORONTO (AP) -- The Toronto Blue Jays have claimed first baseman-outfielder Russ Canzler on waivers from the Cleveland Indians.
The Blue Jays made the move Friday.
The 26-year-old Canzler hit .269 with three home runs and 11 RBIs in 26 games for the Indians last season. He also hit 22 homers in Triple-A and has spent some time at third base in the minors.
Toronto outrighted right-hander Mickey Storey to Triple-A Buffalo. The Blue Jays claimed him off waivers from Houston this week.

I think he might be more comparable to Yan Gomes' role last year (except that he doesn't catch). Can play the corners on the INF and OF - great insurance for the inevitable Brett Lawrie injury, can be Lind's platoon partner. I like this pickup.

Minor league numbers look good, as does the SSS from the big leagues, but I would be surprised if he ends up hitting lefties any better than Rajai.
Still, obviously this addition doesn't hurt, especially because they didn't lose Storey

I was about to dismiss this but he really does appear to crush lefties and his minor league numbers aren't bad at all (although I'm not sure where one would find minor league splits).

Nurse is below average at best.
Masai is overrated.
I dont get how so many people believe in the raptors, they have zero to chance to win it all.

He might be placed back on waivers again as Cleveland needs to open up 2 spots to make room for Swisher and Myers

If that indeed happens, MLB needs to adjust the rules regarding waiver pickups. The amount of players going back and forth between the same teams via waivers every other week is ridiculous.

There needs to be a rule like:
i) If you claim a player off waivers, he must stay on the 40-man roster for 45 days; or
ii) If you lose a player on waivers, you cannot reacquire that player for 90 days
or something to prevent this joke of a waiver system.
