Edinson Volquez "rumour"

Post#1 » by Mak » Mon Jun 24, 2013 2:05 am

The Padres might be able to work a trade involving Edinson Volquez with Baltimore, Philadelphia or Toronto.

The three clubs have scouted Volquez recently.

Volquez is 5-6 with a 5.67 ERA and 71 strikeouts in 87 innings this season.

There is no way, right? This guy is terrible. I hope Baltimore gets him.

Yeah, no. In prioritizing team needs, a mediocre reliever is not on the Jays' A-list. Or Z-list. (And with some long-time observers comparing the re-made Maicer I. to Robbie A., I'm not sure what exactly our needs are.)

Jays are just being mentioned because they always are used by agents to leverage a better deal for their clients - with another team.

Volquez is a starter. Not a particularly good one, but a starter nonetheless.

There's no logic in acquiring a so-so guy like him, we have an abundance of pitchers? If we are interested in someone, it should be a 1-2 starter.

Right you are, Randle. Not sure why I said that in my post, I looked at his numbers when I saw the WT earlier yesterday, but didn't re-check before I responded to the OP.

Anyway, my point stands. "Depth" per se is always a good thing, but we have a shortage of spots on the 26, and maybe even on the 40-man-roster, available right now with Reyes, Lawrie, Morrow and Happ waiting in the wings, and Santos, Hutchison and Drabek available (I assume) to the club before September. The only thing I can imagine is a trade for Bonifacio, but that would still leave AA with hard decisions to make in the next few weeks.

But I'll rephrase my question: what position should be AA's priority for acquisition? A better back-up (or starting!) catcher would be nice, but Dickey is already comfortable with Thole and the other pitchers generally have been doing fine with JPA. This team as a whole is performing at a high level, and has to continue to do so to make the post-season in this furshlugginer division. Bringing in the usual mediocrity is not going to cut it.

Euw.

The only way I'd be okay with this is if Pete Walker or Pat Hentgen have a theory or idea for how to maximize his talent and lower those walks... and if the Jays don't really have to give up much of anything. Otherwise, I'd muuuuch prefer some combo of Morrow, Happ, Wang, and Rogers. Meh.
Good Lord, the little stoner's got a point.

Meh, as long as we aren't giving up anything of even remote significance then it doesn't hurt to have him playing at AAA in case Wang or Rogers begins to struggle (and Morrow or Happ aren't ready yet).

My guess is pre-Wang when we were desperate we got into this conversation and AA won't walk away from it in case we face further adversities, but I can't imagine with the way things are right now and the progression of the guys coming back from injury that he'd pull a trigger on Volquez.

Rumour is just to build up value amongst the most competitive division in baseball. I wouldn't think too much of it.
