'Doc' contains Dodgers with arm, bat
By Cathal Kelly
Yesterday, Halladay looked equally vulnerable at the outset, allowing five consecutive batters to reach base in the first inning while giving up two runs. But from the second on, Halladay settled into an overpowering groove.

"I feel like I did a better job of being able to slow the game down," Halladay said. "A lot of the time you get caught up in your mechanics, in what you're doing wrong."

Halladay helped his own cause with two hits off Dodgers starter Jason Schmidt, including an RBI single.

Doc proves he's a double threat
By Bob Elliott
Before he picked up a bat, Halladay had to right himself after a two-run Dodgers rally with two out in the first. Halladay retired Juan Pierre with the bases loaded to get out of it.

"It was a case of slowing myself down. I was rushing," said Halladay, who retired 11 in a row from the time he hit Andre Ethier until Rafael Furcal singled with one out in the fifth. By that time the Jays had rolled to a 9-2 lead.

And about that hitting. Halladay didn't take pre-game batting practice. Instead, he worked on bunting in an indoor cage. He came in 1-for-29 as a major-league hitter. He finished with the first-ever two-hit game by a Jays pitcher in the regular season.

Janssen got 'em
By Bob Elliott
Casey Janssen, who grew up both a Dodgers and an Angels fan in nearby Huntington Beach, Calif., gained his third save of the season on Saturday.

Janssen pitched two scoreless innings, giving up a walk, in front of 50 friends and family.

"It actually helped going from the stretch as it slowed me down," Janssen said. The Jays chose to give closer Jeremy Accardo the night off. "Usually when you come off after the eighth Brad Arnsberg (pitching coach) will either say 'nice job' or 'go get 'em, finish this off.' " It was obvious what Arnsberg told Janssen, who saved the 1-0 win.

Halladay overcomes rough start in Jays' win
By Jeff Blair
Troy Glaus had two solo home runs and scored three runs as five Blue Jays hitters had multiple-hit games in front of a crowd of 50,183 at Dodger Stadium, many of whom headed for the exits in the sixth inning. Glaus's second homer, a shot to deep centre field, ended the afternoon for Jason Schmidt, 1-3, who lasted just one batter into the fifth inning in his second start since returning from a 45-game absence because of shoulder bursitis.

"Winning a 1-0 game is always good for your psyche," Glaus said, referring to the Blue Jays' win on Saturday, in which Shaun Marcum and the bullpen made Matt Stairs's solo homer hold up. "But it was nice to have a game where we finally took advantage of a lot of opportunities."

All's Not Wells
By Jeff Blair
Now it's not even a whispered aside or a suggestion. Now, Toronto Blue Jays manager John Gibbons is openly talking about installing Vernon Wells in either the first or second spot in the batting order along with Aaron Hill, and slotting Alex Rios into an RBI spot as the No. 3 hitter.
Wells is mired in a horrific slump. He batted just .221 in May and heading into Sunday's series finale against the Los Angeles Dodgers is batting .200 for the month of June. Wells had two-hit games in three of four games during the Blue Jays recent homestand - raising his average from .252 to .264 in the span of four days - but has gone 0-for-12 since.

After rocky start, Halladay's pitching leads Blue Jays to defeat Dodgers 11-5
By John Nadel
Halladay said all he did to prepare offensively was to bunt in the batting cage.

"Stay through the middle - good lesson," said Frank Thomas, the Blue Jays' designated hitter who didn't play Sunday because the DH isn't used during interleague games at NL parks.

"He's now hit one more slider up the middle than I have," joked Troy Glaus, who doubled and scored in the third and hit solo homers leading off the fifth and sixth innings to give him 10 this season.

Toronto took a 2-0 lead in the first, scoring the first run on back-to-back doubles by Alex Rios and Matt Stairs and the second while Aaron Lind was grounding into a double play.
