Davidi: Jays lining up Stroman to replace McGowan ... soon?

The Toronto Blue Jays are aligning Marcus Stroman’s next start with that of Dustin McGowan, a sign the prized prospect may be nearing his big-league debut.

Stroman – 1-2 with a 2.18 ERA and 26 strikeouts in 20.2 innings over four outings at triple-A Buffalo – was due to start Saturday for the Bisons, but a rainout Friday pushed everyone back a day.

Yet rather than pitch him on Sunday, when his next turn comes up, the plan is for him to start Tuesday against Louisville, which coincides with McGowan’s start in Kansas City.

On Thursday, manager John Gibbons said McGowan would start Tuesday as planned but his status beyond that was, “we’ll see.”

The Blue Jays have regarded Stroman as a fully formed pitcher ready for the majors since spring training, and assistant GM Tony LaCava told Sportsnet’s Ben Nicholson-Smith this week that “it’s just a matter of the opportunity and the right time for him. We think his time is coming soon.”

Should McGowan falter or fail to pitch deep into the game Tuesday, Stroman could be in line to start May 4 in Pittsburgh.

McGowan's diabetes affecting him on mound.

Dustin McGowan’s diabetes has affected his pitching performances, tiring him out after 60+ pitches, and he plans to take the necessary steps to get back to being the starter he wants to be.

It looks like Stroman will be called up shortly. Hopefully he does well. Back in the day, the Jays had 1 or 2 guys from the minors come up and produce right away on a regular basis. Cant remember the last guy that did that.

Define 'back in the day' for me, please.

This is the right move. McGowan is a bullpen guy, I've loved the story and his comeback but a guy with so many years off and Diabetes to boot should be in the BP.

The future of this rotation lies with Hutchinson, Stroman and Sanchez. What fits around them might very well be a guy like Nolin and another vet. Morrow i can't stand and I would move if another team bites. He's got the AJ Burnett syndrome here.
That's what she said.

I wish he was as good as AJ Burnett.

He has the velocity of Burnett, but not much else. He struggles so much with command. Burnett would at least have command for a little while before he lost it--and once Halladay talked to him he became dominant before we gave him away.

So do I. But the stuff is comparable. And the mental fragility....
