It's August

Post#1 » by Waylon Mercy » Fri Aug 1, 2014 8:50 pm

It's been 21 loooooooooooooooong years...

But they did it the Toronto Blue Jays are about to play "meaningful" games in the month
of August since 1993.

Even if they collapse this season has to be considered a success as they've shown "progress"
for the first time since the early 90's.

I'm reluctant to praise Rogers and AA/Beeston so I would like to thank Selig for adding
the 2nd wild card and the AL East for being mediocre.

My stance as a long time angry/disgusted Jays fan has soften up a bit and I plan on going to
a bunch of games here in the final 8 weeks.

I wonder if the Toronto Star or Sun will have a little box on the front page of the paper with
the daily standings and BJ Birdie (I guess Ace now) like they did when we were in pennant races
back in the late 80's early 90's.

Let's hope we're in a similar or better spot on September 1st

As long suffering fans, we should definitely enjoy meaningful August baseball.

But make no mistake, anything less than playoffs will not be considered a success; AA would lose his job and the core very likely broken up.
Nick Nurse recounting his first meeting with Kawhi:
“We could have gone forever. (Raptors management) kept knocking on the door and I was like, ‘A couple more minutes.’ Because we were really into it."

I don't know about that...

AA is Beestons "golden boy" and I can't see him firing over a collapse. With the state of Tampa
and Boston and the emergence of young arms like Stroman, Sanchez and Hutch I don't think it
makes sense for us to blow it up with the AL East in a weakened state even if its only for another
season or 2.

Neither do I, but I think Bautista would demand a trade. And if you trade Bautista, you probably won't be a position to compete.

I could never see Bautista demanding a trade just because he was a journeymen who we turned
into a massive star so I think there is some loyalty there. The Jays actually have a solid nucleus
they've just done a poor job at adding quality depth.

I never pictured Waylon spreading praise in the direction of Rogers AA/Beeston, even if it is reluctant. Gotta And1 this post.

Great thread. I was 10 years old when i last saw meaningful baseball being played in this city back in 1993. It is a great feeling man. I do not care if they win the division, but as long as they get the 2nd Wildcard, this season for me will not be a disappointment. I feared the worse when EE, Lind and Lawrie got hurt. However, this team showed a lot of character, and impressed me with the way they have played since the All-Star Break. Hopefully they can keep this up. I also will be heading to the Rogers Centre as well these final 8 weeks. Never thought i would have to wait 21 years for meaningful baseball being played again, but it is a damn good feeling as a long-suffering Jays fans who had to witness a lot of bad players and bad baseball.

Who can forget free agent busts like Corey Koskie, Erik Hanson, Randy Myers, and awful players like Willie Greene; who back in 1999 was one of the worst DH's in all of baseball. They gave up Canseco in the off-season of 1998 foolishly, after he smashed 46 Home Runs in 1998, and then he would have a solid all-star year with the Rays for not a great amount of money in 1999; and replaced him with Greene who was struggling to hit .200 all year. Yet i can recall screaming at my TV back in 1999 when Fregosi (RIP), would give Willie Greene critical at bats, and Greene would strike out/pop up/ground out and disappoint as always. Who can forget the terrible trade Gord Ash made trading David Wells for damaged goods Mike Sirotka, who would never pitch for the Jays ever back in 2001. There are other examples of my Jays frustration over these past 21 years, but why bother (LOL). Just glad it is August 1, and the Jays are playing meaningful baseball, and dammit- are in the second wild card position!

Bautista is going to demand a trade to get away from all of his Dominican brethren? Don't see it. Now if the organization starts a fire sale, that's a different story.

Bautista has voiced his frustration publicly on a number of occasions over the last two years. Now obviously there's a big difference between doing that and demanding a trade, but it does point to some tension in the relationship. Jose clearly has a big ego - most would say well backed up by his performance - and he just strikes me as the type to do something like this if the assembled team fails two years in a row.

Anyway, I shouldn't have derailed a positive thread. Carry on :)

Ah, memories of August, 1993. I was watching a game with my girlfriend's brother, and we were debating whether the Jays pitching was strong enough to repeat. Actually, it wasn't a debate. We agreed that there was NO F'N WAY the Jays pitching was good enough to win in the playoffs.

But our offence was. Will history repeat?

I hope the 10 year olds of today are taking the proper precautions to salvage the memories of 2014. They have the technology. I got by (off) for years on my "Oh Canada!" and "The Passion Returns" VHSes.

Ya I was 12 years old back then never in a million years did I think it would take this long...

The last few years all I ever asked was for meaningful games in August and possibly September
I set the bar real low. Once the Jays are out of it in early to mid July the summer becomes so
boring from a sports perspective. It's the Jays playing pointless games, the CFL, MLS, WNBA,
golf, tennis etc might as well shoot me in the head lol What a great year for the MLB Network to
come to Canada.

As a depressed Toronto sports fan it's been torture but think of the kids basically anyone around
23-25 and younger who was to young to see or remember the glory days in the late 80's early 90's.

Or saw the Leafs run in 92-93 and 93-94 and now their is kids on the Raptor board who
didn't see the VC era.

All these youngins know is pain and suffering since birth

Hat off to the Jays for being in the hunt in August. I really did not expect it, but I'm not complaining.

Back in the 90s, the Jays were arguably bigger than the Leafs in this city. That was an amazing time to be a fan.

My favorite Jays teams though, were during the Moseby, Bell, Barfield, Stieb era of the 80s.
