I'd have taken him as a lefty DH bat if they were going to buy him out completely. Not sure why a terrible team like the Rangers would even want him.

This deal is turning out to be pretty solid for the Rangers if you ask me. I'm not sure if I have it right, 'cause the MLBTR reports are a little funky, but it sounds like they're taking on about 6m of the 80ish he's owed. LAA saves about 20m (not to mention the luxury tax whatever that would've been), 'cause Josh gave some back too, some offset by the change in CA vs. TX taxes, the rest actually given back, but that means the Angels are still paying 60m or so for the next three years to have Josh Hamilton play for Texas, which is crazy.

That means for a little over 100 million dollars, the Angels got 240 games, about 1,000 PA, and a roughly 110 wRC+ guy in the OF worth about 3.0 fWAR total. 100 million dollars. Not to mention the luxury tax. No wonder Arte decided to pull back the last year or two.

Angels tried to void the Hamilton contract by turning against him. They thought the MLB would back them up and they would save a few bucks.

However, it got messy. They got to a point where they had said too much and couldnt go back..... bad PR

so they cut their losses and sold him to Texas for barely anything.

Now they will pay him superstar money to play for another team.

I hope he rebounds. Has a monster few years and laughs it to the bank. Angels played dirty. All they had to do was support a player in trouble. Addiction is not same as taking steroids. Its an illness. Hamilton didnt screw his career because he wanted to. Stuff happens.

Good Luck LA

He's probably good for putting fans in the seats. Or at least worth a shot for that reason.
