TORONTO – The Toronto Blue Jays and first-round pick Jon Harris are believed to be nearing agreement on a deal that will pay the Missouri State right-hander the No. 29 spot’s assigned value of $1,944,800, according to multiple industry sources.

The quick signing may very well be followed by contracts for the other players chosen in the first 10 rounds of the draft by amateur scouting director Brian Parker, who has a signing bonus pool of $5,411,000 to work with that made signability an important factor.

Before the draft started, Parker said in an interview that with the seventh-smallest pool, "you really need to bear down and make sure you’re getting the right player – but you’re also getting him at the right price."

After selecting Harris, Parker said, "we’re comfortable with where everything is with him and his advisers."

Scott Eisberg

@SEisbergWCIV

Carl Wise says he'll likely be going to Vancouver- Short Season A-Ball- He says he has to get Passport immediately, Blue Jays told him.

Jeff Pillow @JeffPillowCBB

Travis Bergen and Kal Simmons will not be returning to Kennesaw State and will sign with their MLB teams, sources tell @OmahaChronicles

JC Cardenas will sign:

"It was always my goal to get drafted," Cardenas said. "My dream, since I was a little kid, has been to play pro ball. The Blue Jays were my first workout and they've been following me since high school. It feels really good to be going somewhere I'm wanted and appreciated."

Maybe its just me, but how do these guys not already have a passport? Do Americans never leave the country?

Good to see the signings are coming in quick. I'm intrigued about Carl Wise, power bat at 1B.
That's what she said.

I've never really got the logic in immediately placing an decent prospect at 1b to start. Looks like nobody would dare put Wise at 3b at the pro level but wouldn't you rather him get reps in as a corner outfielder? His arm could at least surely play in left field? Putting a guy at first should at least come a bit later, at least once you've exhausted the possibility of putting him somewhere else on the field.

Many American's have a natural aversion to getting a passport. I think they feel its a slippery slope between that and ending up living in France.

I am an immigration consultant, and our American clients still fight us on getting a passport...its insane.

"Do I really have to get a passport?"
"Yes. You are moving to a different country. YOU HAVE TO GET A PASSPORT!!!"
"Umm...what if I just get a US passport card."
"I guess, but its the same process and that card is mostly useless, it won't let you on a plane or travel outside of North America"
"Sold. Anything to avoid getting a real passport"

I think we trumped the A's. You should have stayed around until the 30th round.

I don't know if he'e Kevin Pillar The Sequel, but Burl the Third sounds like he has that work ethic and could be president of something some day. Well rounded dude. Guy has already made his own personal Jays logo!

So how did the Jays do, any overall draft grades, report cards out yet?

Draft grades are pretty pointless. Beyond the lag time to find out whether these guys are any good, half the battle is simply having a massive draft pool, and we didn't owing to the Martin signing. Consequently, we could get up to our usual shenanigans in manipulating the pool money to get kids dropping on demands and the like, nor could we take many risks. The Astros had a fantastic draft largely because their previous draft was such a **** show, as an example.

Haul looks pretty solid under the circumstances; Harris wasn't my preference, but he's absolutely good value there, and we got intriguing options (including that rarest of Jays picks: a power-hitting college 1B-type in Carl Wise, who could move quickly if the bat translates) thereafter.

I presume you mean Wise is a reasonably high pick, because both Danzler and McBroom were college 1B with power. Danzler, in fact, seems to be mastering FSL, but McBroom's home run power is missing in action, although a .317 average ain't hay.
