Let's not focus on Saunders' injury history or vulnerability. What is mildly irritating now is that his offence simply isn't needed. When the trade was made, Martin had already been signed, and Donaldson had been acquired as a clear upgrade offensively as well as defensively. I presume the theory that motivated AA was that we not only needed a starting left fielder, we needed a left handed bat. In hindsight, with the signing of Carrera, we have another left handed bat. Pillar has kind of outstripped assessments of his talent, but then again I doubt AA thought Pompey would fail in his first try at a full-time job on the 25-man roster. The question is, would we be better off with a healthy Saunders in left, or with what we have plus Happ. Maybe if Happ is still here, Sanchez is in the pen. There are so many more what ifs in the situation, like what if Norris had done better from the get-go, what if Stroman doesn't get hurt, what if he had taken bottom dollar on Navarro and signed another reliever during the winter. In the end, it's pretty hard to unravel all of this, with the one exception that maybe AA didn't realize just how much offence he had added already before he made the Saunders trade.

Anytime you can trade a back end starter with injury issues for another bat with upside (even with injury issues of his own), you have to pull the trigger. Yes it looks like we've lost the deal at this point, but it's a trade I don't think the Jays should regret. The need was for another top of the rotation guy, not another back end starter.

whats there to regret? they didn't want to pay up for either happ/rasmus and took a risk with saunders/pillar/pompey. take money out the equation and of course they regret giving up a starter for an injury prone OF.

The Jays are playing Chris Colabello, Ezequiel Carrera, and Danny Valencia in LF. Just like last month, yeah, I think they could still use Michael Saunders.

Chris Colabello may be the MVP of this team!!
Ok, slight exaggeration. But he has definitely been a great story (at least offensively).

Colabello's horrific fielding takes away nearly everything he does at the plate. Just a 0.4 WAR player.

Take money out of the equation and I still prefer rolling with Saunders/Pillar/Pompey. If you were one of the ones that put up a stink at the time of the deal then you deserve your little pat on the back, but I think most on here were on board with this trade.
