Ahah it wouldnt be real gm if somebody didnt bitch about navarro. No player bats 1.00 every game.

We're talking about a GM that put two 20-year olds in the bullpen to start the season despite there being plenty of bullpen options available. I agree that you have to let an arm as special as his develop into a starter's, but I'm just trying to predict what AA will do based on what we've seen from him in the recent past. That would be my guess if I was a betting man.

I'm hoping that a playoff appearance earns AA an extension, and an extension earns him the latitude to stop making desperate short-term decisions. Suppose we'll see, though.

The thing is his roster decisions have always been sort of baffling to hardcores, but he really hasn't made any kind of crazy short-term trade even though we all believe his job is on the line. I mean, we all thought he was dead to rights at certain points over the last couple of seasons and the panic trade hasn't happened. I think they just truly believe the decisions they've made with the current roster are best for the organization. I should probably wait until the trade deadline, but up until now AA hasn't made the short-term panic trade we'd all expect from a guy likely on his last legs.

I said in the off-season that I thought AA actually extended the team's window to compete with the moves he made. He had that good of an off-season. Then Stroman got hurt and desperation roster moves were aplenty. I would definitely group Osuna as a desperation move. It has worked out so far but it should have never been needed in the first place. An extension and playoff appearance might help AA see things from a more long-term perspective again, and at this point that's really all we can wish for.

I don't see how Osuna was a desperation move? You think he was brought up too soon in his career?

Promoting a 20-year old to the big league bullpen straight from A-Ball is monumentally short-sighted. The fact that Osuna had very little pro experience and was a year removed from TJS made it even more puzzling from a development standpoint. It has worked out, but the probablity of it working out was very low and it may ultimately hurt Osuna long-term if he's trapped in a relief role going forward and/or gets hurt when trying to stretch out next season due to a heavy relief workload this season.

If Stroman was healthy, I'm positive Sanchez would have been the closer and we would not have seen Osuna or Castro in the bigs. Well, maybe Castro since the team was unusually high on him all off-season, but probably not Osuna.

It was a desperation move. Practically everything done after Stroman's injury was desperation, that's why Pompey, Norris, and Castro were demoting weeks into the season. Even AA knew it. Osuna panning out was a lucky break, at least in terms of the team's chances in 2015. Whether it was the right move long-term remains to be seen.

Yeah, fair enough.

On Osuna, even if he were in the minors starting he would have an innings limit. If he continues on his current pace he will have roughly the same amount of innings as had he started.

He is facing tougher competition up here but less times through the order.

Anyways there are pros and cons, but the Cardinals have taken similar paths for many of their pitchers and it works for them.
