I'm not sure I get the logic behind this. Prior to the trade Syndegaard was viewed as a high end prospect with front of the rotation calibre stuff. D'Arnaud was viewed as a potential franchise catcher. They both developed into what they were projected to become. I mean, it's one thing if a guy comes out of nowhere and takes a team by storm with surprising results. Pittsburgh didn't trade Bautista expecting him to become a 40-50 home run hitter. Syndegaard and D'Arnaud were traded knowing their potential but AA expected Dickey's immediate value to be worth more in the short-term.

Most young prospects, especially pitchers, never come close to reaching their potential. Sanchez was higher regarded than Syndergaard at the time and Sanchez has flopped. You can never know. d'Arnaud was the primary piece involved, and while he's good, I don't think any of us would have a huge problem with the trade if it was just him that we lost.

I would not count Sanchez out just yet. In my opinion, he was rushed to the majors by the Jays. He is likely gonna be considered a late bloomer as a result.... Syndergaard also would struggled if he were still in Toronto. Elite pitchers should be brought up patiently.

Sanchez still has dominant front of the rotation potential.
