Yeah. We're literally a few months removed from a Sox exec stating that handing out megadeals to over 30s FAs is not sound business. What's really annoying is how successful they've been despite yo-yoing between diametrically opposed models every week.
At least they don't half-ass when they commit one way or the other.
Maybe. I think their success/clear directions which you speak can still be linked to Theo Espstein who is clearly one of the smartest men in MLB. He left after the 2011 season, they won the WS 2 years later primarily using his base of players but have struggled since. Much of the farm system and young talent, which is their primary strength right now, can be linked back to his leadership although they have drafted decently since he left. Their Sox first major move after he left was hiring Bobby Valentine who was an epic disaster. Overall Ben Cherington was not a good GM but the Sox farm system and budget do allow them to rebound quicker than most.
I'm not sure their current, somewhat impatient direction of trading farm talent and signing expensive free agents is a good direction based on what they have built. Sandoval and Ramirez were awful deals. Price will almost certainly join them in time. Trading elite prospects for a closer was questionable as was the long term contract give to Porcello. They paid Allen Craig $9 million to play in AAA last season. No matter what direction they take, it has still included handing out questionable large contracts the past 4 years.
