Arguing whether Rogers should have opened up the purse strings and offered Price a deal is pointless because Price was going to the highest bidder. He supposedly loved St Louis which was close to home and his parents. A pitcher friendly league and a team that is the model of winning consistency yet he chose Boston (and known to be dysfunctional at times) for 30 million more over the Cards and apparently didn't even wait for a counter offer from the Cards once Boston offered thier final deal. Even if the Jays offered 200 million, he still would have went to the Sox for the extra 17 milion or the Sox would have offered even more to make sure they got him.
Price is in the business of selling himself. By gushing how great Toronto was is simply a way of driving up demand for his services and hoping to bring Toronto into the bidding war in the off season. And getting the fanbase on his side by telling them how great they are is his sneaky way to add extra fan pressure toward management to make an offer that he may not normally have gotten. Unfortunately for him, Jays management didn't bow to the pressure.
Supposedly the Sox gave Price a deadline and were gonna go after Grienke. Anybody familiar with Grienke knows he would not sign with Boston and thier baseball mad city. He hates that kind of atmosphere should things go wrong for him and had a history of not handling workplace stress very well.
