Pompey is in the running for LF, so he's fighting for the job. What's wrong with that?? I personally don't think much of him, and didn't last year either, but they are not counting on Saunders for the full season. As for Saunders playing 40 games, that's 1/4 of a season. He's been worth roughly $12-14M in a full season the past few years. If he spends 3/4 on the DL (an over-estimation, even for a guy like him) he's worth $3-4M. Obviously if he only plays 9 games again or whatever it was it'll be a bust but the chances of that are slim to none.

We still have a pretty stacked team so yes, good times indeed.

The Jays could roll most anyone out into LF and they will still look like a top 3 MLB offense and a top 3 MLB defensive team. It's not exactly the primary problem people need to worry about for 2016.

I wouldn't come to any conclusions on his defense based on the month sample early last year. His head wasn't right and it adversely impacted his play.

He has great speed and a decent arm, and I've heard good things about his defense in the minors. I'd be surprised if he didn't end up being an above-average defender in the bigs.

He's got ~350 plate appearances in Buffalo under his belt, and ~150 in the bigs. If his time isn't now, it's soon. This team, as stacked as it is offensively, can afford to extend one or two players a long leash.
Nick Nurse recounting his first meeting with Kawhi:
“We could have gone forever. (Raptors management) kept knocking on the door and I was like, ‘A couple more minutes.’ Because we were really into it."

While not elite, he can certainly be a capable corner outfielder.

Yep, if you think things suck for this coming season, just wait a couple of years...

I always shake my head at people who write off young players based on a small rookie season sample. We're talking about a young player who played so well in the lower minors that he skipped AAA on his way to the majors. Just because he didn't light the world on fire in 100 MLB AB's doesn't mean his future is suddenly non-existent. Just check out the numbers for Roy Halladay and Carlos Delgado in their rookie seasons.

"Also from Nightengale’s piece, he notes that the Reds were willing to pay roughly $8MM of Jay Bruce’s $12.5MM salary as part of the abandoned three-team trade that would’ve sent Bruce to the Blue Jays, Michael Saunders to the Angels and prospects to Cincinnati. It was expected that the Reds would have to eat some money in any Bruce deal, given that the outfielder is coming off two consecutive subpar seasons. Saunders is making $2.9MM in 2016, so adding Bruce would’ve cost Toronto around $1.6MM in extra salary (not counting the $1MM buyout of Bruce’s $13MM club option for 2017)."

Makes a lot of sense now. I prefer to pay Bruce 4.5M than Saunders 2.9M. Or 5.5M if you buy him out (4.5M in 2016 and 1.0M in 2017) or pick up his option for 2017 at 13M... Good insurance with Bautista and Saunders as free agents.

Hopefully Saunders can stay healthy, if not i would definitely be interested in Bruce if Saunders starts sucking. Gives you insurance in 2017.

Yep, last I checked Carlos Delgado had a better career than Kevin Maas (anyone remember how he shot out of the gate?)...
