The Smoak phenomenon has me fascinated. Is this the 2017 Michael Saunders story - i.e. sure, but everyone is going to figure him out, soon? Or is this somehow sustainable for the entire season. He doesn't seem to have a vulnerability as pronounced as Saunders' inability to hit the low/outside stuff.

Jeff Sullivan wrote a preseason article stating that Smoak had the exit velocity and launch angle of a very good hitter...strikeouts were really holding him back. Best I can tell, he's just managing to avoid chasing bad offspeed stuff, and he has always been able to crush fastballs.

Smoak is a beast! MVP on this team for the season so far. This team would be in last place if it wasn't for his hitting and heroics at times this year.

A split against the Yankees right now is a win in my books, so go ahead and make the next game thread lol.

Even with nothing broken, I suspect Travis will be out at least a week If not more. Martin and Travis getting hurt while they're both hot is bad luck.

And being a switch hitter who can field his position are other plusses. No need for platoons that can screw with his comfort at the plate.

Saunders and Smoke had something in common last season in that neither could make contact with a curveball to save their life. Once word got around on how to pitch Saunders, his season was over. He's no better this year.

Smoak seems to have a pretty good eye for it this year, probably due to consistent playing time. His strikeouts are down, he's not swinging at much junk at all, and although I can't find any stats by pitch type, it seems like he is making better contact with breaking balls than ever before.

I'm still eating crow on Smoak's extension. I thought Atkins had lost his mind with that signing. Turned out to be one of his best moves.
