Granted, the Dodgers farm system at that time sucked (beyond a recent graduate at 3B named Beltre who almost definitely wasn't on the menu), but that didn't make the deal any better. Can still remember the Jays talking up Mondesi's early career accomplishments (they must've mentioned that he was ROY about 300 times), neglecting the bit where he had already noticeably declined from that level of performance.


At least in that one case there's the mitigating factor that Green wanted out/wasn't going to re-sign. Same issue with Halladay.

There's just nothing excusing trading Olerud for Person. Or two A grade prospects for a 38 year old knuckler.

It's mitigating in that we weren't going to get full freight for him, but getting an older, mediocre RF on a huge contract for that time (he was tied for the 13th-richest contract in baseball in 2000) was the exact opposite of what we needed.

If the Jays don't have players of debatable talents on massive contracts, how are fans supposed to know that the team is trying to win?
