Re: Your $30m spending spree
Want to take a stab at J.D. Martinez. How about these apples?

Now that's not even the floor for Josh Donaldson if he has a good season, considering that he plays a premier position well.

Oh, Jay Bruce didn't read last winter's script for aging power outfielders with mediocre D

These agents need to start doing some market research.

Re: Your $30m spending spree
I been reading Bruce's next contract is likely to be comparable to Reddick's 4 year, $52M deal - Would still pass.
The FA outfielders are so underwhelming i wouldn't commit long-term money on any of those guys.

Not that I've read any research that supports this, but based on our experiences with aging outfielders I'd say in general FA outfielders (most are over 30) actually have to improve with their bat to compensate for their shrinking range. 5 year deals are pretty much promises that they will need two GG's in the two other OF positions to make up for their shortcomings and become an "average" OF defensively.
To me, outfielders should always have great running speed (so usually younger guys). Even if they have the odd crap read, I'd rather live with that then Bautista having to make a sliding catch to catch a ball Pompey or Teoscar would have had jogging. Over a few games having a Bautista type in RF is fine, but over the course of the season it starts to hurt you.

Bruce is still 30 though. Some team will probably give him 4 years at least.

Re: Your $30m spending spree
Bruce isn't half the player Reddick is. Actually that's not fair, he's projected to be worth exactly half as much as Reddick was at the start of last season. If he gets 4/52 I'll be amazed. Especially after seeing the league wise up with Mark Trumbo last year. I'm glad we went out and got our lefty slugger we so badly needed with Morales so we can just focus on acquiring good talent in any form. If we end up with Bruce, something went seriously wrong.

Alex Cobb 12 million/
Eduardo Nunez 12 million/
Save 6 million for late season acquisition if we are competing.
Underwhelming. Low risk.

4 years isn't that long. Not going to find anyone better to plug that hole in RF in FA. Sign Bruce, add Cobb and get us a backup catcher.

Over his last 4 years, Bruce has had 2,167 at bats, and over the span has had a .237/.303/.457 slash line.
If you were going to sign a negative defensive value .237/.303/.457 aging OF, mind as well bring back Bautista. We are talking Goins level production from a corner OF spot with below average defense.

Yeah, Bruce as a one-year stopgap would have been bad but tolerable. Four years is a recipe for disaster.

“We could have gone forever. (Raptors management) kept knocking on the door and I was like, ‘A couple more minutes.’ Because we were really into it."

Re: Your $30m spending spree
we need a great starter more than anything right now, or at least a good one...theres only darvish and arrieta in the 150-200m range and cobb and lynn in that 70-100m area, thats it...gotta be looking at trades like the diaz one, and even that market is slim, who wants to lose good starting pitching

Don't think we need a great starter - an average one would do nicely. My top pick remains Tyler Chatwood. He has a really good chance at outperforming his next contract - based on his forecasted AAV/term - by getting out of Colorado.

Re: Your $30m spending spree
Mike Fiers was non tendered by the Astros. If you want a buy low starter, he would be a decent pick up. He had a poor 2017 due to a rise in home runs allowed, but his secondary numbers looked similar to what he's done in the past, if not a little better in some areas (more ground balls, fewer line drives, more soft contact/less hard contact, SwStr% at his career avg, K's at his career average, no change in velocity). Also even if he signed a one year deal he would have an extra year of control as well due to years of service. Would be a pretty good #5 option in a market lacking difference making starters.

an okay starter will do only if we improve our offense...the teams that made playoffs are really dangerous
