Blue Jays aquire (RP) Bryan Baker

The Toronto Blue Jays acquired right-handed relief prospect Bryan Baker from the Colorado Rockies on Tuesday in a move that completes last month’s trade of reliever Seunghwan Oh.

The Blue Jays traded Oh to Colorado on July 26 in exchange for prospects Chad Spanberger, Forrest Wall and now Baker, who was listed as a player to be named later in the initial deal.

Baker, 23, made 43 relief appearances this season for the single-A Lancaster JetHawks of the California League, posting a 4-2 record with one save and a 3.80 earned-run average.

An 11th-round pick by the Rockies in the 2016 draft, Baker has 58 strikeouts in 45 innings pitched this year.

He has a career minor league record of 14-8 in 80 games, including 13 starts, a 3.73 ERA and 156 strikeouts in 147 1/3 innings pitched.

I know this is a minor move. But I made a new thread to ask how does this work. What does player to be named work and how is the player picked? I mean why did it take so long to complete. It's a mystery to me.

There are a variety of reasons why a PTBNL might be used. Sometimes, it's a list of players, and the team receiving the player gets to choose the player (or, sometimes, cash) at a later point. Sometimes, as was the case -- infamously -- with Trea Turner, it's a single player who cannot be traded at the time the original agreement is made, so that portion of the deal is delayed until whatever is restricting the trade is no longer an obstacle.

And at least once, the PTBNL was the player traded in the first place. The Jays once traded John McDonald for a PTBNL or cash, and in the offseason the transaction was settled when the Tigers sent back John McDonald.

I have no idea why it was PTBNL'd in this case. Heyman's suggestion when the trade went down was that the piece was known, but he might've been off.

Highly unlikely but maybe the Jays deemed they didnt have room for the player to be assigned to the level they wanted him to play at so they let him get meaningful innings with the Rockies until they found a level the deemed acceptable.
