I'd like to be wrong here, but I don't see limitations lifted before September. That's the entire season without fans, if the Jays even play in Toronto. There is a scenario I could see where it opens up July. But we'll see. We'll have to look at countries like Israel who are ahead of the curve in terms of vaccination rates. If doing 30-50% of people and the majority of vulnerable are driving down severe illness, than that's one scenario where I could see the stadium open for late summer. We've also been thrown a wrench with the new variants B117, 501Y.V2, and P.1 - the former two being much more contagious - meaning reaching herd requires a higher threshold. Hard to predict. Just like the Jays signings

So you'd be blowing a wad of cash and not even benefiting from the hype and cashing in on 30k fans every night.

Just play it smart. Our strength lies within our core and farm. That's what's going to bring us success.

Good points. The thing is, we’re still going to add some good players. It’s just some people seem to think that after losing out on DJ there’s nobody left out there when most of the market is still untouched. That’s why the ‘sky is falling’ some people are claiming is so ridiculous.

Who do you think we're going to get? How much payroll do you think we will add?

I thought we had a very good chance. And if not, there were several other big names still out there that would also improve the team. That’s the beauty of baseball compared to basketball. If you lose out on Giannis or Kawhi, it’s a franchise altering miss, but in MLB absolutely no single player makes or breaks your team’s future. Washington lost Bryce Harper and won the WS while the Phillies missed the playoffs twice.

As for the Jays, when a MLB team has a lot of money to spend and is motivated to spend it, they’re not going to be left high and dry. But that doesn’t stop people from overreacting along the way. I’ve seen it hundreds of times before.

So now that the big reveal has happened, can you at least tell me who else you think we're going to go get? Is everyone here expecting them to get another good SP or just re-sign Walker or both?

I think the ultimate wish was 1 premier hitter and 1 top of the line starter.

I'll take Yates, Walker and Tanaka over a top-of-the-line starter which in this scenario is Bauer.

I think the biggest misses of this current regime so far is what Schad alluded to, was recognizing and moving good assests at a time when we were just not good enough. Trying to shore up a decline core with other aging players to keep it going.

Not trading Josh Donaldson 1 year earlier then when they did, not sure if it was to appease the fans or appease Rogers, but a good gm/president shouldn't be making moves to satisfy the fan base even if he was a fan favorite. Thank god they didn't sign bautisa to a long term deal, he fell of a cliff, and it would mean we wouldn't have the resources to sign Springer today (This could similarily play out 4-5 years down the road). Not moving off Ken Giles, could have gotten a king ransom until his arm basically blew up. Would have sped up our ascend or at very least had more prospect capital/assets to get deals done.

Also making some strange deals like trading J.A Happ for an mlb ready player in Drury +, or trading at all for Derek fisher...

I predict that they’ll sign other free agents who fit into their budget, same prediction I made 3 days ago.

So on the Shatkins resume we have trades for Grichuk, Teoscar, Hatch, Matz and SWR were excellent acquisitions. They also drafted Bichette, Biggio, Mahoah, Pearson, Martin, and Groshans. Claimed Romano and signed Ryu, Springer, Moreno, Martinez and Kirk.

AA signed Vlad.

That may actually make them equal ;)

Am I missing anything of substance?

I am just hoping with the DJ signing, maybe there will be some more movement.

I’m with you. I wouldn’t mind signing JBJ to play CF and then fill in multiple spots and add pitching depth with solid 2nd tier guys. But MLB fans have always been blinded by the big name acquisition, and that’s so unimportant. Depth and value are more important. Bryce Harper hasn’t yet played a playoff game in Philly for his $1 trillion contract while the team he left won the WS.

Bryce Harper is not actually worth his contract.

He's been a very good player and had 1 MVP year, but other than that, Trout (the player he's always compared to) crushes him handedly.

At least with Pujols he had a long HOF type career before his production sky dived in LAA. It's Ironic the Angels had both the best and worst contract (arguably) in baseball for a long time.

Obviously we know that Springer signed here now, and signing anyone over 30 is a risk but it's good to know that we aren't dependent on the guy like Philly is with Bryce.

Yes. The longer they stick with Montoyo, the stronger that’s a point against them. We’ll see in the off-season what happens. Because if they decide it’s finally time to get serious about winning (and they absolutely should because they’ve built a potentially stacked team for 2022), they need someone fit for the job.
