This doesn't look like a playoff team right now.
Nick Nurse recounting his first meeting with Kawhi:
“We could have gone forever. (Raptors management) kept knocking on the door and I was like, ‘A couple more minutes.’ Because we were really into it."

It sure doesn't. Springer needs to get his **** together. Another 0 for today. Striking out at almost 50% rate of his plate appearances since he got back from his injury.

Tampa is on another level. We can't beat them in a series. Just too good for us.

Doesn't look like this is a playoff team. We should be sellers at the trade deadline. Trade Semien, Ray and any other expiring vet contract for prospects, and start again next season through FA. Build around Vladdy and Bo. Fire Montoyo, the fielding coach and any of the injury/performance coaches. Bring in some competent coaches and a manager who knows what he is doing.

He has been abysmal over the past 6 weeks and should be batting no higher than 8th. Every season he has a 4 week period where he drives the ball to right field for a bit, hits .300 and then whether it's league adjustment or his inability to maintain a consistent approach, it all goes out the window and he's back to killing rallies with ground balls to the shortstop. On paper the production is there, but that sub .300 OBP for weeks or months at a time is just brutal.

So, we have 7 games against the Red Sox, 3 against the Rangers/Mets, and the remaining game from this series to take us to the brink of the deadline. It isn't entirely unthinkable that we'll be sellers if we do poorly, though we don't have a huge amount to sell: Semien and Ray are the two rentals that might have significant trade value, and there aren't terribly many teams in contention that need MI help.

Still seems like the most likely (and most rational) choice is that we make a couple marginal moves to shore up the 'pen beyond this season, without detracting from the resources we'll need to have a big offseason. We aren't out of the race, but 4.5 back of the Wild Card/9 back in the division leaves little margin for error.

Semien and Ray: Are free agency rules the same this winter, because I don't see any risk in giving those two qualifying offers?

My preference would be to clean out the outfield picture - we have one too many to be sitting him. Go get one controllable asset for next season. See if there is a taker for McGuire or Jansen, and promote Kirk. Not quite selling but creating opportunity.

Semien would absolutely be QO'd, so it'd take a significant offer to make it worthwhile to move him. Unless we're totally out of the race I doubt that we move him, for that reason.

Ray, I dunno if you QO him. $19m is a large chunk of change for a guy as variable as he has been, and I'm guessing he'd accept rather than hit FA, as I can't see him getting much more than 3/$45m on the market.
