Good trade
The Jays weren't going to go with five catchers on the 40 man roster this winter, and Moreno, Kirk and the incumbents is choice enough. Adams might not have survived the pre=Rule 5 culling or the draft.

There is no retained salary, Jays pick up the full pro-rated tab.

In terms of 'don't give up too much, but try to stay in contention' this seems reasonable. Would love it if he's more than just a rental though.

Ideal deal.
Purge redundant catcher depth. Acquire useful bullpen arm. Basically sink or swim with our young team. We did the heavy lifting in the offseason acquiring Semien and Springer. It's not like our FO can just keep adding allstars when the current group has failed to translate their sporadic scoring into W's...

The ironic thing is that Hand was available on waivers this past offseason, could've had him without giving up any pieces. But better later than never I suppose.

Describing Adams as a piece might be a bit of a stretch. He's a hit-first catcher who can't hit a breaking ball. Not ideal.

Adams looks like an AAAA player at best right now. The power is real, but the Ks are a serious problem in AAA and a nightmare in MLB. And he's 25 at a position of depth. I don't think he had much of any value, so Hand is a pretty decent return. I'm not that high on Hand, but there's no doubt he's a definite upgrade and will hopefully give the team a mental boost.
Nick Nurse recounting his first meeting with Kawhi:
“We could have gone forever. (Raptors management) kept knocking on the door and I was like, ‘A couple more minutes.’ Because we were really into it."

Not concerned about what we gave up, but a rental who is showing real signs this season of diminished effectiveness wasn't really what I was hoping for in terms of 'pen help. Hand is an upgrade, but his K rate has plummeted because he can no longer get his slider past people.
**** your asterisk.

I'm more than fine with a rental if it keeps the price down.
This year is a longshot at best anyway. Give the team a fighting chance but then it's got to be up to them.
Next offseason we can pick from more options on the FA market and get a couple guys to ink for the extra year or 2 if we want. That way we're ready in 2022 with an upgraded pen and all of our Top 10 or 12 prospects ready to jump in.

Ray is the key. If he doesn't sign with the Blue Jays who do we go after in FA? I think we take a step back if he walks. He's been our best SP this year.
