Montoyo's a rare truly awful manager, but even truly awful managers are only (at worst) going to cost you a few wins a season. It's hard to confidently say that we'll miss the playoffs with him when the only reason we might miss the playoffs this year despite his presence is that the AL East is stacked to a degree that has literally never happened before.

If we miss the playoffs this year, it's chiefly because of Charlie. We've been a much better team than both the Red Sox and the Yankees. They're both playing above their projected W-L while we're 8 games below ours. Sure, we lost a few games due to nothing other than bad luck, but we also lost several games due to sheer stupidity.

And if we couldn't get it done this year, with career years from a bunch of guys (who might not even be with the team next season), I'm not optimistic about next season.

I hope I'm wrong.

They’re not gonna fire him after a 90 win season. They should but they won’t.

Such a complete and utter waste of talent and it’s only going to continue.

We did, but we were also in a division with three teams that are likely to clear 90 wins, and played as nomads for half the year. The AL East will always be tough, but this is the toughest it's ever been. It's unlikely to be this tough again.

Beyond that, the goal has to be to Charlie-proof the roster, assuming he isn't turfed. That means bullpen depth, because that makes it harder (though not impossible) for him to make catastrophic decisions. And it means no Valera, under any circumstances.

Or let's not have to worry about Charlie-proofing the roster.

That's kind of like saying "let's Jonah-proof the ship's crew".

Charlie is the hazard. He's causing the ship to list. He should be thrown over the rail. We don't owe him anything. And he doesn't deserve any better.

Fire the manager. Burn the homer jacket. Let's get wins.

Oh, I fully agree. Charlie should be fired and all traces that he ever existed should be burned. But I don't think him returning necessarily precludes us making the playoffs, it just makes it harder.

Put down the pitchforks. Charlie has done some amazing things for the club, like helping put on the homer jacket.

When the margins are this thin, it makes you realize how awful it is to have a manager this bad.

New manager + fixed BP + replacing or re-signing Semien and Ray, and the team should be in the playoffs next year.

He’s also a rare manager where it’s easy to quantify the number of games he is at least semi-responsible for costing you. Remember the loss he chose to have by sticking it to chatwood and leaving him out to dry after he showed Charlie attitude?? I’d love to have that loss back now

I remember it took years before Masai finally canned Casey. I wanted Casey out in 2015. But Casey was still a better basketball coach than Montoyo is as a baseball manager. We were right about Casey and we will be proven right about Montoyo, in time

Great analogy. The last Toronto team to win a championship in the last 25 years fired their "manager of the year" the year before winning. I'm up for repeating that situation!

So whats the plan? Underachieving team fires its manager in june and eventually scuffles along to a .500 record... Shatkins have a readymade excuse to buy themselves an extra year.

Nothing was ever going to happen with this after a 91 win season, but it does mean that they’ve ultimately given the green light to all of the stupid **** this guy does so it is ultimately on them in the end.
