Likely an unpopular opinion and some will come at me.

Once you are a top 5 payroll, like we are you have a tremendous advantage over the majority of the league in your ability to make the playoffs.

Complaining about the top #1 spender (the Dodgers) becomes a little hypocritical in my view. Reminds me of the Red Sox who were the clear #2 spender in baseball for a time in the 2000's complaining about the Yankees.

I mean, ish.

The difference between our 26 man active payroll and the Dodgers' was the same as ours (7th in MLB) and the Pirates (23rd in MLB)
And for total payroll, we were closer to Baltimore (16th in MLB) than to the Dodgers.

Yes, we spend more than a lot of teams, but wow, the differences get big at the top end.

i assume you are talking about 2025. I think our payroll compared to the median will be even higher in 2026.

I think you might be using this site as well. I agree with your data (re 2025) relating to $ differences related to total payroll. The "active payroll figure" is misleading because at the end of the regular season we had Bassitt, Berrios Santander, Garcia on the IL, so that skews that number. Its sill spent money so I focus on total payroll.

So as you stated its about the same each way $ wise. Although % wise 37% less than Dodgers, and 57% above median.

But I do think for 2026 the delta between us and the median will be larger than 57% and 93 million. And we won't be 95 million behind the Dodgers. Well I hope so anyway!

How is that more true than 'IF he was gonna sign Dodgers, it would've been done by now' or 'If he was gonna sign Boston...'?

There are 30 teams that haven't signed him yet. 29 of those teams were allowed to start talking to him at the same time. The Jays didn't have a headstart, and there's no reason to believe that him not signing with us, specifically, immediately means that we won't.

Why wouldn't they have just gotten desperate and "overpaid" for Alonso if they were going to do that?

They didn't want to go more than 3 years for Alonso but will back up the truck for Tucker? Doesn't make too much sense.
