Atkins just did the unthinkable.
I'm getting off the #FireAtkins train for now.

Let's not get too carried away here lol

Bruh you're literally the only person hating on this trade (aside from Astros fans).
Not a good look.

Dear holy mother of Satan...they included Joey and Wagner too?

I'm officially confused now...
We watched the tragedy unfold. We did as we were told, we bought and sold. It was the greatest show on Earth...but then it was over.

Could this Kikuchi trade turn into this generations , Bartolo Colon for Cliff Lee, Brandon Phillips, and Grady Sizemore trade?
or is that a reach?

This is a huge return for Kikuchi. I didn't expect this at all considering how cold Kikuchi has been. Kikuchi is an extreme peaks and valleys pitcher and I'm shocked the Astros gave up so much for a couple months of him where there's no guarantee he'll step up to perform in the limited starts he'll make for them before FA.

Just Bloss alone would've been worth it but this return is insane lol. You absolutely need to float IKF, Green and even guys like Bassitt for trade if the market is willing to overpay like this.

Loperfido and Wagner are 25-year-olds playing in the PCL, where offensive numbers get inflated - so we'll see how they fare in the majors. Bloss looks like a solid pickup - looks like a back end starter to me, but those are valuable.
Nick Nurse recounting his first meeting with Kawhi:
“We could have gone forever. (Raptors management) kept knocking on the door and I was like, ‘A couple more minutes.’ Because we were really into it."

Reading Astros Reddit right now is pretty funny. They're asking if Vlad is in the deal

Man, this is nuts. I can't believe we just pulled this off.

I wouldn't have even thought Gausman gets this back in a trade.

I would even float out Gausman, along with Bassitt, IKF, and Green. I never expected this type of return for Kikuchi. Maybe the Astros front office ignored how terrible Kikuchi has been in 7 out of his last 8 Starts. Total fleece job for Kikuchi, who was going to walk at the end of the year.

Seattle went all in this weekend so I suspect a bit of panic by the Astros. I like all the acquisitions in our trades even if most will not get a sniff at the majors. It is going to create a lot of competition in the system.

I can see the argument for keeping Green, but there is no need to keep IKF. So sell high there.

With the great season Green is having, his value is higher than ever. He is also owed 10.5 million next year, and given his injury history, now is the perfect time to deal him with the supposed interest out there for him.

Imagine if we were in the playoff hunt this season and Atkins traded guys like Martinez and Yariel Rodriguez for 2 months of Kikuchi. We would've lost it

That was definitely a factor. The Astros benefitted so much from a trash division this season. It's crazy they're in the hunt at all despite their terrible start and paper thin rotation. When you're essentially being gifted a playoff spot and division title, you do what it takes to make it happen.

Not really that close.

#1. At the time of the deal the prospect capital given up by the Expos was much higher. Those 3 were all top 100 prospects at the time (and as an Expo fan I think at least 2 were top 50) and many thought Sizemore was undervalued. Phillips was top 20 earlier with the Expos IIRC.

#2, All those prospects ended up being very successful. Its just very rare to happen that all 3 will hit, even if they were all top 50 types.

I'm not sure Gausman or Bassitt would have that much value right now, unless the Jays are eating part of the 2025 contract.

Teams are probably leery of picking up a $21 or $25m contract in 2025 for a mid 30's pitcher who has just been decent this year. (around 100 ERA+). They would prefer the offseason cap flex.

We could get more for them next year if they pitch a tad better in 2025.

Maybe I'm wrong in my assessment, but either way I don't think the management team has any interest in trading OK players on the current team that are not expiring (like Gasuman, Bassitt, Berrios). They should consider it or do it, but I assume they are much more interested in a flawed re-tool attempt in 2025.

I'm very shocked how much value the Jays are getting in return for rental players.

This... this never happens for the Jays lol.
