If the jays aren't buying they should start selling players nearing the big contract for pitching prospects.

Hopefully the ptbnl is a decent prospect from the low minor’s ( so it becomes a trade down scenario where their just relieving a blocked player for someone whose not yet ready) otherwise it’s concerning to see the drop in value of Jordan Groshans. The Jays are starting to have enough high end guys coming through their system that aren’t developing any power to be concerning.

I mean bullpen deals should never be earth shattering maneuvers. I don't mind losing Groshans. He's been underwhelming and is replaceable. We need some SP depth and outfield insurance pls. At least 1 of those things minimum

Price seem high for Bass/pop and PNTBL... For a Top 100 prospect (or former one).

Pop I guess has some control, and is Canadian if that means anything (And we drafted back 2014)

Groshans couldn't or wouldn't alter his approach for more power, hits 40% to opposite field. His numbers keep coming down, would have had to be added to the 40 man roster - as well as others - and the Jays are loaded at 2B/3B/SS, not to mention that there is no place for any of those prospects right now at the major league level even if they were ready.

There was a fair chance Groshans wasn't gonna have any prospect value left at all by this time next year if he continued to progress like he was. He never really hit for much power coming up but that got ridiculous this year (sub .300 SLG).

This is a really good get considering the year that Bass is having (7th in MLB in fWAR among RPs) and the control that Pop has (becomes a FA in 2027).

Groshans is having an awful year, and the fact that he's a top 100 prospect shouldn't be taken too seriously, as he wasn't going to be one at year's end.

It's still a bit of a price to pay. Pop's a guy with rather limited time in the bigs, but his calling card is that his sinker, which he throws a ridiculous percentage of the time, is nigh on impossible to lift. Generates a tonne of grounders, doesn't walk many, gives up very few HRs. Totally different pitcher to Cimber, but not an entirely dissimilar statistical profile.

Edit: also, because this comes up every couple years, people can totally make standalone threads for Jays trades.

Jordan Groshans flamed out tremendously. I have no problem with this but desperately hope there is more to come.

Good trade for the Jays

Banda has been DFA'd which accounts for the other needed 40 man spots for this trade as well as one of the spots on the major league roster. Presumably, Scott Thornton will go to BUF.

So, Pop is under control thru 2026 and Bass has a club option for 2023.

This is a really nice deal here. We have extracted some real value from Groshans after it seeming like it would not be the case.
