Because we're not letting recency bias cloud our judgment of his performance this year.
Santiago Espinal made the all-star team over Bichette. The team braintrust moved him all the way down to 6th in the lineup because he was stinking it up so bad.
Two weeks ago he was a league average hitter on the year with mediocre at best defense. All players go through slumps, but his slump lasted most of the year.

He’s been an above average hitting SS (and above average hitter in general) every month this year but one. On the season, he’s 26% better than the average hitter, and 31% better than the average hitting SS. He’s tied with Lindor as the 4th best hitting SS in baseball. He’s top 30 in baseball in fWAR, and first on the team.

Espinal has been hitting awfully for months. He entered today with a .227/.286/.285 line in his previous 62 games. He's reasonably close to Bichette on bWAR, but falling away, but he's miles apart on fWAR (and also falling away).

Bo has had a wRC+ in every season so far, higher than Derek Jeter’s career wRC+. If he were to play at the pace he’s played at so far, for the same number of career games Jeter played, he would finish with an fWAR like 10 wins higher.

Can someone explain to me about our most desired standing. If we don't win the division, is it better to be seeded 3rd wildcard so we face Cleveland in 1st round, who is weaker than Tampa / Seattle in a 3 game series?
And Seattle's final 19 games are all against tanking teams.

Depends if you want to be home vs a better team or on the road vs a weaker team. The second wild card is obviously the worst one.

We'd rather be seeded 4th or 6th than 5th. Considering Seattle's joke schedule compared to our schedule of contenders, 6th appears the far more likely option.

People were most definitely not OK with that before September rolled around, and that's the point.
You can't have a supposed franchise cornerstone put up such mediocre numbers for 4/5ths of a year, especially when he's mediocre at best with the glove.
It's not like we were expecting him to be John MacDonald with the bat coming into the year.

In his age 24 year, Jeter put up a bWAR of 7.5.
Bichette currently sits at 2.6, and that after an otherworldly two weeks late in the year.

yeah, it's not really the time to be arguing over how good our best position player has been this year. ignore any elite player's best 3 week stretch of their season and surprise! their numbers won't look as sexy. bo's been **** good all year -- just the worst of it seems worse than it actually is from what your eyes were telling you.
