Mets pick up Carlos Carrasco's $14 million option for 2023 - Newsday

Among those the Mets are interested in — in addition to Jacob deGrom, Chris Bassitt and Taijuan Walker, their own free agents — is lefthander Andrew Heaney, sources said. Eppler is familiar with Heaney from their overlapping Angels tenures.

How do non-tenders work for players who still have multiple years of arb eligibility left?

Do they still have those arb years when another team picks them up, or do they just become outright FAs for future years as well?

Free agent, no?

Otherwise they would be stuck at that arby number and potentially never signed by anyone

They become free agents, and can signed for any dollar amount. However, they still have years of team control thereafter.

An example: Ryne Stanek was non-tendered by the Marlins after 2020, when his Rays fairy dust wore off. Stanek, who'd have otherwise been arb-eligible, then signed a one-year FA contract with the Astros, and was tendered in 2022 (his Arb 2 season) and will be tendered in 2023 (his Arb 3 season) as well, as those basically follow him through free agency.

And if they get tendered by their new teams, and can't agree on a dollar amount, it goes back to arb?

Non-tendered | Glossary | MLB.com

Non-tendered

Definition

When a club "non-tenders" a player, it declines to give that player a contract for the upcoming season, thereby immediately making him a free agent. Players on the 40-man roster with fewer than six years of Major League service time must be tendered contracts each offseason by a set deadline -- typically a date in early December -- or non-tendered and released to the free-agent pool.

In many instances, a club will non-tender a player because it feels the raise he will receive in arbitration would be greater than his on-field value. In other cases, a club will non-tender a player simply to clear a spot on the 40-man roster -- even if that player isn't due much more than the league minimum the following season.

Examples

Henderson Alvarez was due to receive $4 million or more in arbitration following the 2015 campaign, in which he made just four starts before undergoing season-ending shoulder surgery. Rather than tender a contract to a player who missed considerable time, the Marlins non-tendered Alvarez in December 2015.

Also in December 2015, the Astros elected to non-tender first baseman Chris Carter rather than pay him a raise on his $4.175 million salary from the prior season.

If Alex Reyes could stay healthy he'd be a really interesting bullpen piece... Lots of swing and miss, but also a lot of walks too.
