I wonder if they'll ask Russell Martin his input on the decision?

With our offense struggling so badly, we have no chance in hell of scoring against the O's elite late relief. The only way we're winning this game is if we can tag the O's starter for a few runs and then hold on.

Hey guys - pretty new to baseball but have been really getting into it past few months as well as last years playoff run.

Is there any chance Sanchez starts this game? He seems to undoubtedly be our best pitcher - but the commentators mentioned today that since we used him up today its going to be tough for him to pitch Tuesday. Is that typically how it works - the pitcher needs a solid 3-4 days of recovery time before he can pitch again?

I've seen some decent Liriano sentiment on Twitter. The corollary is Stroman is available out of the pen.

Nope. 0% chance. The only way Sanchez pitches is if the game goes 20+ innings and he comes in relief. Pitching on 1-days rest is pretty much unheard of in todays game, although if you want the closest thing to it, look at what Madison Bumgarner did in the World Series a few years ago.

Yes, it would be next to impossible to pitch him on Tuesday. In extraordinary games like the seventh game of the league championship series or the World Series, a team might send out its ace on short rest, but one day off between starts is hugely unlikely. In the case of Sanchez, he's already thrown more innings than any previous season, and it would really be unwise to tempt fate by pushing him on very short rest, even if the team thought he might be effective for a few innings. Also, it's not like the rest of the starting pitchers are stiffs. Stroman, Liriano, Happ and Estrada have all delivered quality starts the last time out. If not for a weak offensive performance and some bullpen flops, the Jays might have won an additional 2-3 games over the past eight days. Where we do need help is in the bullpen, so one or two of the starters is a candidate to see action on Tuesday in a relief role. If Stroman starts, look to Liriano and possibly Happ in a relief role - Happ pitched Saturday so Tuesday would be a sideline throw day for him anyway. Liriano warmed up today, but would still be good to relieve on Tuesday, as Estrada would become a starting candidate for Thursday in Arlington, with Sanchez throwing game 2.

Liriano with Stroman out of the pen. Would give us the best chance of winning.

Good god, if that's how Baltimore is against lefties I think we need to put Liriano out there to start.

Playoffs are a completely different story...its evident in every league that come playoff time certain players play better in meaningful moments. Stroman killed it last year in the playoffs. I know his numbers this year aren't great but something about him says he's a big game pitcher. I'd prefer Stro in there. He lives for these kinda things. Also it'd be nice if we got some help from the umpires lol. I bet the MLB is drooling over a possible Texas vs Toronto matchup...aka Odor vs Bautista

stroman didnt actually "kill it" in the playoffs... hes was alright... he killed it going into the playoffs though.

the orioles hit stroman hard and i dont trust him right now. if this was last year i wouldve been all for it but not with the way hes pitched this season...

only way i feel comfortable winning this game is if we score 10 runs... anything less than that and im afraid we lose. dudes should get on the steroids just for this one game.

If we still had the old format -- with only one wild card -- we'd be in the exact same situation we're in now, wouldn't we? Except it would qualify as a play-in game instead of a playoff game.
