Cannot even compare this proposed contract to Vernon Wells. Wells had very good seasons from 2003-2006 and he signed for 7 years, and played in the premium position of Centrefield everyday for market value of what a guy like his stature was expecting to get in free agency after the 2006 season. Of course Wells could never duplicate his play from 2003-2006 in the years after he got his big deal. Guerrero on the other hand will be paid for 14 years until the age of 40, at an outlandish sum for a first baseman coming off one very good year only. He had two underwhelming seasons prior to that.

Cannot believe Shapiro and Atkins are bowing down to Vlad's contract demands, and willing to cripple this organization for the next 14 years. All we know- last year was a mirage. The real Vlad is the guy we saw in 2022/2023, and looking terrible in the first week or so of this baseball season. I do not understand the rush to sign this guy now? Maybe these clowns are so desperate for good publicity that they are willing to offer this ridiculous contract to Vlad. The right course of action was to trade Vlad in the off-season for a solid return. The ship has sailed on that.

I’m pretty confident in saying that Shapiro and Atkins would have had nothing to do with this contract if it’s for $500 million. No chance they value Vlad that highly. This is comparable to Vernon Wells in another way. Ricciardi apparently did not want to sign Wells to that deal but Paul Godfrey took control of that. This looks like a Rogers play to me, assuming the rumors are true.

Wells was actually really good at the time he signed that deal and consistently so in the 3-4 years before that. Vlad isn’t even close to the player Wells was.

This will destroy the franchise.

The only positive is potentially that the uncertainty of Vladdy’s tenure here may have hurt us in signing other talents but knowing he’s here long term could have the opposite effect for next year. If the Jays are committed to add more talent around him and we can get back to being relevant then how much he’s paid toward the back half as a DH is more of a Rogers issue than an us issue in a non cap league like this.

If that is the case- let Vlad leave in free agency. He is no Judge or Ohtani, but wants to be paid like them. I rather invest that 500 million more wisely to shore up the bullpen and everyday lineup in other positions, rather than cripple my organization for the next 14 years.

I’d say the fact that he’s been this player for the majority of his career is more of a turnoff.

Pujols, Cabrera, Fielder. Just in this past 10-15 years we've seen these mega contracts for first basement hardly work out. This could backfire terribly as well. Paying 30-40 million aav to a guy averaging 1-2 WAR a season down the line.
