It is starting to become apparent that JP needs to go. I didn't mind the Thomas signing, if only because it was my assumption that JP brought him in with the trade deadline in mind: hope that he puts up solid numbers in the first half of the season, then flip him to a contender to get some value from a club in need of a power DH (Seattle and the Angels come to mind). Now it appears he really is committed to maintaining a mediocre on-field product, a team perpetually in the mix for that coveted third runner-up spot in the Wild Card chase.
While pleased with the last draft, it hardly compensates for the past four years; back in 2002 or 2003, we were rated as the best minor-league system in baseball. Now, the Jays have virtually no top-notch talent waiting in the wings.
I wonder if this approach is driven from the top; the Jays have done well (by their standards) in attendance and television numbers, which may be preventing the team from attempting any kind of real rebuild. I hope it is simply naive incompetence on JP's part...that can easily be rectified. An ownership group committed to middle-of-the-road results cannot.
