I’m glad we don’t have Nimmo for that amount of money.

Kodai Senga, Mets agree on 5-year, $75 million contract, sources say - ESPN

The Senga signing, first reported by SNY, encapsulated a madcap week in which the Mets also re-signed center fielder Brandon Nimmo to an eight-year, $162 million contract and brought in right-handed reliever David Robertson on a one-year, $10 million deal. The signings pushed the Mets to uncharted waters for baseball payrolls, where the top have always hovered around the $300 million range.

Currently, the Mets' competitive-balance-tax payroll -- calculated by adding the average annual value of all their deals -- is estimated to be around $345 million. If that holds, the Mets would be levied a never-before-seen luxury-tax penalty: $6 million for money spent from $233 million to $253 million; $8.4 million for $253 million to $273 million; $15 million for $273 million to $293 million; and $46.8 million for above $293 million -- a 90% tax rate. All told, the Mets are facing a $76.2 million CBT bill and a total payroll in excess of $421 million.

New York could trade veterans or look to rid salary, but owner Steve Cohen -- for whom the fourth luxury-tax threshold is nicknamed -- is clearly not shy about spending. Senga, who receives an opt-out after the 2025 season and a full no-trade clause, is the latest beneficiary.

And with good reason: Along with Carlos Rodon and former Mets right-hander Chris Bassitt, Senga represented one of the few remaining top pitchers in a free agent class that has seen Jacob deGrom leave the Mets and Verlander join them. While Senga never won the Sawamura Award, given to the best pitcher in Japan, he has long been considered among the finest. He was ever difficult to square up in 2022, posting a 1.94 ERA, striking out 156 in 144 innings and allowing just seven home runs.

Senga's desire to be with the Mets, along with a contract that does not include a posting fee because Senga had earned full free agency, helped win the day. And with it takes the Mets' spending nearly $80 million higher than the second-largest payroll, that of the New York Yankees, according to Baseball Prospectus.

A three ring catcher circus. Hilarious. Even more hilarious. Who still needs a catcher that badly?

Cease, Alvarez, Manoah receive top bonus from new $50M pool | AP News

NEW YORK (AP) — Chicago White Sox right-hander Dylan Cease will receive the largest amount in the new $50 million pool for pre-arbitration players, earning $2,457,426.

Houston Astros designated hitter Yordan Alvarez is second with $2,381,143, according to figures compiled by Major League Baseball and the players’ association under the March lockout settlement. Toronto right-hander Alek Manoah is third at $2,191,023.

Eleven players are receiving $1 million or more.

Arizona right-hander Zac Gallen gets $1,670,875, followed by Seattle center fielder Julio Rodríguez ($1,550,850), Atlanta outfielder Michael Harris II ($1,361,435), Cleveland closer Emmanuel Clase ($1,354,962), Guardians second baseman Andrés Giménez ($1,308,805), Baltimore catcher Adley Rutschman ($1,177,555), Astros outfielder Kyle Tucker ($1,146,555) and Braves right-hander Spencer Strider ($1,077,294).

A total of 100 players will receive the payments under a plan aimed to get more money to players without sufficient service time for salary arbitration eligibility: 2 years, 116 days of major league service for 2022.

Cease had a $750,000 salary this year, Alvarez $764,600, Manoah $706,200, Gallen $745,600 and Rodríguez the $700,000 major league minimum.

Rodríguez agreed in August to a $209.3 million, 12-year contract that starts next season and Alvarez agreed in June to a $115 million, six-year deal that starts in 2023.

Under the March agreement, an eligible player receives $2.5 million for winning a MVP or Cy Young Award, $1.75 million for second in the voting, $1.5 million for third, $1 million for fourth, fifth or selection to the all-MLB first team, $750,000 for Rookie of the Year, $500,000 for second in Rookie of the Year voting or all-MLB second team.

All-MLB teams are voted by fans, media members, broadcasters, former players and officials.

A player is eligible to receive the bonus for one achievement per year, earning only the highest amount. The remaining money is allocated by a WAR formula.

Man, remember last year when the Jays signed some medium-term contracts and the US media was grumbling that we were using some sort of unfair money pile?

Would you give Manoah a 13/360 contract? He's younger with a higher WAR and I still wouldn't give him that much.

Maybe. I'm curious what they are projecting the revenue to be in 5 and 10 years. When do they renegotiate another tv contract?

28mil might be the equivalent of 15 in 10 years. Lots of risk of injury, but insurance and preexisting conditions are likely less and easier to get to cover it.

Vladdy and Bo looking at these contracts and licking their chops. We should have re-upped them 2 years ago...now as they approach FA, is 10 years and 400 mill out of the quetstion?
