Re: 2018-19 Offseason Thread
What’s important to track, however, is how the discourse around a specific situation changes over time because shifts are telling. And the way the trade chatter around Marcus Stroman and Aaron Sanchez has evolved since the General Managers Meetings a month ago – when Ross Atkins unequivocally said “no one likes Marcus more than we do, we value him the most” – a deal for one of them, at least, suddenly seems a lot more tangible.
There’s no deal right now. But it sure sounds like there’s a path to get there.
One rival executive who has spoken with the Blue Jays doesn’t believe they’re actively shopping either starter but were actively listening, while another said he could easily see them trading away one of the right-handers this winter.
The challenge in any such trade is that the Blue Jays are already perilously thin in the rotation and that they don’t have a similarly high-ceilinged arm due to arrive imminently from the farm system. They could spend the next few years trying to replicate the kind of impact both have already delivered at the big-league level, which is why trying to extend them also makes sense.
• The Blue Jays have been drawing interest in their catching, including on Russell Martin, who’s due $20 million in 2019. A veteran rival executive believes Martin’s contract is movable because “he can still play and help somebody." The question is whether the Blue Jays will take back enough of the money.” After noting how much the Blue Jays like and appreciate the 36-year-old, Atkins added, “we would consider some opportunity if there was one to move him for talent that made sense for the organization.” The key term there is “for talent.” If the Blue Jays are going to eat a substantial amount of money, they want some level of prospect in return.
• A rival executive described Blue Jays closer Ken Giles as “available.” The hard-throwing right-hander went 14-for-14 in converting saves after coming over from Houston as part of the return for Roberto Osuna and has two years of control remaining. His market may not really develop until some of the free-agent relievers on the market start coming off the board.

Hamilton gets a contract because he can run.

You didn't quote the most interesting part of the article, at the end where it said:
• An agent, unprompted, on Blue Jays president and CEO Mark Shapiro. “Just give him time. What he’s doing is going to work.”

I hope we keep Russell until at least after the series in Montreal if we plan on moving him.

Kevin Pillar – OF Toronto Blue Jays
The Rockies have dealt with the Blue Jays on trades in years past, as Jeff Bridich even snagged Seunghwan Oh during the stretch run this past year, and the Jays could be a team that the Rockies turn to this offseason to add some depth to the 2019 roster.
Kevin Pillar offers defense, and he would slot right into center field when all said and done, and whether you agree with them or not, the defensive metrics for Charlie Blackmon last season in centerfield did not make the bearded-wonder look very good, so an improvement on the defensive side of things in centerfield could end up paying dividends for Colorado, plus a move to a corner spot could alleviate some of the load that comes with manning center at Coors Field for Charlie Blackmon.
You may be thinking, why Kevin Pillar? Well, because he’s cheap, and he’d fit in well with this team. The soon-to-be 30-year-old Pillar has played on some very good teams and had a few deep playoff runs where he was the starting center fielder, and a guy who has done it before is always someone you want in your room. This would be a depth move, and by no means would be the biggest move the Rockies make this offseason, but it would be an underrated addition to an already good team.
Rockies Receive: OF Kevin Pillar
Blue Jays Receive: LHP Harrison Musgrave

I mean, Pillar isn't going to fetch a tonne, but Musgrave is a waiver-quality reliever with poor stuff and worse control. A consistently league-average CF with two years of team control gets you a little more than that.

**** your asterisk.

I have absolutely no idea why Cincinnati would look at the current state of the NL Central and say "yeah, this is our window!", but I'm here for it.

RotoWire News: Kimbrel declined the Red Sox's one-year, $17.9 million qualifying offer and became a free agent Monday, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports. (11/12/2018)
Dombrowski apparently will not be spending on a closer with several other free agents coming in 2019 and beyond.

Good luck, Kimbrel. Papelbon at the same age got 4/$50M in 2012. Wade Davis got 3/$52M last year and the Rockies have been severely over-paying for pitchers out of necessity. For a guy that relies heavily on velocity, Kimbrel will have a tough time making a case. At least as a reliever, there will always be multiple teams that would want him and could fit him in their plans, but waiting it out too long could still hurt him. I'm gonna guess 4/$60M is his peak guarantee.

His stats were quite good last year but average velocity went down a full mile per hour. Something to watch this season and beyond.
