I said this when the Reds had 1. This pitching really sucks. Another season of a fun offense down the drain

This is the first year in a long time we've had a fun offense. It just happens to coincide with the end of Guillermo's abysmal tenure as hitting coach.
Nick Nurse recounting his first meeting with Kawhi:
“We could have gone forever. (Raptors management) kept knocking on the door and I was like, ‘A couple more minutes.’ Because we were really into it."

What made them think Lauer could pitch another inning here

Oh here comes Schneider just as Lauer looks like he's settling down he's out of the game

He was only gonna get Elly cause he kinda sucks hitting from the right side. Lauer has been shaky all game and is rightfully getting pulled for Varland.

Because most of them suck, including and especially Berrios and Lauer

You guys are way too hard on Berrios. He's a perfectly serviceable major league starter. He's being paid to be a #3-#4 type, and that's what he is, putting a consistent 2-3 WAR per season. The hate comes from expecting him to be a top of the rotation guy, which he clearly isn't.

Meanwhile Lauer has come out of nowhere to have an amazing season, the last few outings notwithstanding. Again, being way too hard on the guy.

Lauer Is the type of pitcher that needs an inning or two to dial in. Not an ideal reliever

Very true. He has none. Lauer was doing well initially through smoke and mirrors. When teams studied him more, he can no longer fool opposing batters. That is why he has been terrible in now four straight outings, and less effective overall in July/August than he was early on in the year.

Berrios has a 4.49 FIP this year and an ERA over 5 over the last 2 months, he’s not good. Durable, yes, but the quality of stuff has diminished incredibly.

Lauer has fully come back to earth (I.e. the fringe journeyman he’s always been)

The 2022 Jays tied for the 15th highest wRC+ of all time. But for some reason we traded some of our best hitters after that season.

Berrios has sucked consistently for two months. Being hard on him? It is the opposite. He is being paid 19 Million this year and next. Almost 50 million combined in 2027 and 2028. That is not being paid like a 3/4 Starter. Take a look at his numbers after June 27th, when he was dominant against Boston. Guy has been absolute garbage for two months with an ERA close to 6 in July, and close to 5 in August.

Two really nice back to back outing from Varland.

Hopefully he is finding himself, because we need a few of these guys to have good Septembers.

Return to Toronto Blue Jays
