He has a mid-90s fastball and a killer changeup, played at three levels this past season. He could be another Mayza in the bullpen before too long. He's the Jays #23 prospect on MLBpipeline. Here's a writeup.

I mean looking from afar, he could pass for Aaron Judge.

It's hard to imagine Gabriel Moreno isn't worth the risk of trading a catcher on the 26 man roster (meaning Kirk or Jansen as McGuire has little trade value but might be a good backup candidate who also offers a LH bat). Then again, Moreno/Jansen might be enough if the team commits to getting Moreno reps behind the plate.

Moreno's AFL line: .474/.577/.789/1.366

A few other AFL lines:

Spencer Horwitz: .370/.500/.407/.907
Leo Jimenez: .214/.522/.357/.859

(that's a wild slash line for Leo, pitching in the AFL must be pretty erratic)

Jays' pitchers

Brody Rodning, 0-0. 5 games in relief 5.1IP, 4H, 0R, 1BB, 7K, 0.94 Whip, 0.00 ERA
Graham Spraker, 0-0. 5 games in relief, 5.0IP. 1H, 0R, 1BB, 8K, 0.40 Whip, 0.00 ERA

Toronto's youngest, perhaps happiest, AFLer - MLB.com

Leo Jimenez spent his summer playing at the Blue Jays’ two lowest stateside levels, and at times, was nursing a left (non-throwing) shoulder injury. So when the 20-year-old was told to head to the Arizona Fall League to make up at-bats against much tougher arms, he became not only the youngest of Toronto’s AFL contingent, but also perhaps the happiest.

“That was one of the best moments of my life right now as a professional player,” he said before the season began. “That was amazing. I called my mom right away, called my family to let them know. I knew this was going to be a great experience for me.”

When he was on the diamond this summer, Jimenez had one of the most statistically interesting seasons among Toronto Minor Leaguers. In making his jump stateside to Dunedin, the right-handed hitter batted .315, giving him the 10th-best average by a Low-A player with at least 200 plate appearances in 2021.

On top of that, he also walked 51 times and struck out only 35 in that 54-game span. His 1.5 K/BB ratio (including his rehab appearances in the Florida Complex League) ranked third among Minor Leaguers with at least 200 PA, regardless of level. That’s third out of a group of 1,378. His .523 OBP in the small sample was tops among the sizable group.

That ability to put bat on ball and reach base at an elite clip, however, came with relatively no power. Jimenez slugged only .381 in his 54 games at Dunedin, and only nine of his 53 hits went for extra bases (one homer, eight doubles).

So while the Panama native is in Arizona to pick up some of his lost at-bats from the summer, the Fall League also offers him a chance to work directly on squeezing a little more pop out of his 5-foot-11, 160-pound frame.

Early results indicate that remains a work in progress. Jimenez entered Thursday 3-for-14 (.214) with two doubles through six games with Mesa. But true to form, he walked six times, got hit by three pitches and had a .522 OBP in his 23 plate appearances during those early looks for the Solar Sox.

Working with new faces from the Orioles, Cubs, Marlins and A’s systems could help Jimenez close out 2021 with a slightly more well-rounded offensive profile.

“The speed of the game changes,” said the middle infielder, who has primarily played second in the AFL. “Everything changes. If you want to make it to the big leagues, you have to get used to playing at a higher level. Talk to coaches. Talk to players. Tell them that if they pick something up, just help me and tell me what I can do better.”

Thanks, Schad. That does ring a bell now in the cobwebs of my memory, and explains his disappearance from some of the rankings.Too bad for him.

An article on my unicorn, Spencer Horwitz

https://www.mlb.com/news/spencer-horwitz-blue-jays-shows-off-bat-and-speed-in-afl

Jays' Horwitz shows off bat, speed in AFL

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- The Arizona Fall League annually boasts the premier prospect talent in the game. Through play Wednesday afternoon, with myriad elite up-and-comers on the circuit, just one qualified player boasts a batting average north of .400: Spencer Horwitz.

“It’s a blessing to be here, the AFL is great competition,” Horwitz said after his two-hit, two-steal performance propelled Mesa to a 5-4 win over Scottsdale.

The Toronto first-base prospect has 20 hits through 12 AFL games and stands second with a .508 on-base percentage, and he batted .294 over 109 Minor League games this summer. Don't try to tell Horwitz -- who's struck out just 98 times in 653 pro at-bats -- that whiffs are an acceptable tradeoff for the pursuit of a little more power.

“I’m a big competitor in the box. I hate striking out more than anything,” he said. “I like to put balls in play, make things happen and do damage when the pitchers make mistakes. If I’m putting balls in play four to five times a game, I’m helping my team win, for sure. I know that.”

The left-handed hitter walked (70 times) more than he struck out (68) in 2021, and his .401 OBP over 105 games for Vancouver stood second in the High-A West.

While he totaled 12 home runs this year, nine of those came during his final 32 games (including two in his four-game stint with Double-A New Hampshire). Over that stretch, he produced a striking .414/.480/.734 slash line with 37 RBIs.

Horwitz, who had four stolen bases in the regular season, has equaled that number in 12 AFL games. The secret?

“Just getting some good reads, good jumps, good help from the coaches,” he said.

In the fourth inning Wednesday, Horwitz swiped second and third base during back-to-back at-bats, showcasing those good reads by sliding in both times without a throw.

Overall, Horwitz has somewhat flown under the radar. Selected by Toronto in the 24th round of the 2019 Draft out of Radford University, the 23-year-old has just 16 plate appearances at the Double-A level and is not ranked among the Top 30 Blue Jays prospects.

During his time with the Solar Sox, he has been a sponge for information.

“The guys next to me are the ones that help the most; they’re some of the best players I’ve ever played with,” Horwitz said. “They’re going to be in the big leagues [sometime] soon, so we like to pick each others' brains and help each other out as much as we can.”

Meanwhile, the excitement around Mesa catcher -- and No. 1 Toronto prospect -- Gabriel Moreno builds with every line drive that he peppers during the Fall League.

Moreno MLB's No. 32 prospect, went 1-for-2 with a blistering double, adding a pair of walks and two RBIs in the victory, raising his OPS to 1.077 -- fourth in the league -- through 11 games.

In 32 games for Double-A New Hampshire this season, Moreno posted a slash line of .373/.441/.651 with 18 extra-base hits and 45 RBIs. But injuries, specifically to his thumb, limited him to 37 games all year. But he has been front and center for a potent Solar Sox squad topping the AFL with a whopping nine runs per game average.

There's no question that Moreno has the athleticism to handle 3B. Probably other IF positions, as well. But when you have someone who looks like they could be a generational player at the hardest position to fill, don't overcomplicate things.
