Everyone knows Edwins agent **** up that whole situation. He was offered 3/60M. And yes a 25-30 year grichuk is likely better than Encarnacion at this point in their careers.

Grichuk is essentialy a 2-3 war player with the possibilty of breaking out more than that. Edwin has fwar lower than that, mostly because his only contribution to teams is just above average wRC+. Edwin used to be a 2-5 win player but wouldn't count on that much anymore.

Shi had it at 4 years, $80m with a possible fifth year option that probably would've pushed the guarantee into the $85m range:

Edwin's hot week aside, we should be reeeeeeeeally glad they turned that down, even if it ended with the (awful) Morales contract.

Didn't hear that one. But he hit 2 home runs, he hasn't done that before!

"Edwin Encarnacion’s agent says the former Toronto Blue Jays slugger turned down more money to agree to a three-year, $60-million contract with Cleveland Indians.

Paul Kinzer told TSN.ca he was with family at a Six Flags amusement park on Thursday night when he reached the deal with Cleveland."

In this instance , once again, it would appear not to be.

The article says he might have made more with Cleveland rather than Toronto. So, we really didn’t go for it did we?

Notwithstanding they signed morales quickly in the offseason, rendering Edwin moot at that point.

Again, not shapiros fault of course! Moralys and grichuk are much better!

We tried re-signing him clearly and his agent was under the impression he took less. He was moot alright, moot to the point that Cleveland gave up on him 2 years in and again went with a better expected option,Carlos Santana.

Was having his rotator cuff looked at, averages 97 mph fastballs but throws over %30 hard sliders, it was more a question of when with that combination.

Albies gave away 4 FA years for a total of $45M!! Insane. he would have been 26 entering free agency. A few years from now, teams are gonna have a lot of money to spend on whatever few players actually reach free agency.

Only logic I can see is if players/agents really expect the bottom to fall out over the next few years, because these extensions are getting to be crazy cheap.

Fun facts:

Last year teams employed the shift 17% of the time. This year teams are shifting 24% of the time. That's an increase of over 40%.

Apparently even MLB managers got the memo that stats, once in a blue while, can actually, you know, help you win and stuff. Crazy talk, I know, but apparently true.

Read on Twitter

Albies and the Braves agreed Thursday to a $35 million, seven-year contract, a deal that includes a pair of team options that could make it worth $45 million for nine seasons.

If he continues to produce at the level he did last year, Albies likely would have doubled or tripled the dollars.

“I look at it as it’s not just for money,” he said. “Because I’m not playing for money. I’m playing for my career. And I took it because I want my family to be safe.”

The agreement announced Thursday supersedes a one-year contract signed last month that called for a $575,000 salary in the major leagues — $20,000 above the minimum.

He gets $1 million in each of the next two seasons, $3 million in 2021, $5 million in 2022 and $7 million each in 2023, ’24 and ’25. Atlanta has a $7 million option for 2026 with a $4 million buyout, and if that is exercised, the Braves have a $7 million option for 2027 with no buyout.

Albies knew he signed a team-friendly contract.

“I mean, I see it this way. If I left dollars on the table, I’m going to play hard to get it in four or five years, seven years,” Albies said. “If I left it on the table, it’s good that now I know I can get it then, coming back.”

True, but also don’t discount that GM’s are getting rid of old-school managers and making sure they have more analytical minds in the dugout. You’re either on board or you’re unemployed.
